Kenai hockey sweeps weekend from Kodiak

The visiting Kenai Central hockey team swept the weekend from Kodiak, winning 9-1 on Friday and 12-2 on Saturday in Northern Lights Conference play.

The Kardinals are 9-7-1 overall and 5-1-0 in the league.

Friday, Kenai led 2-0 after the first period, then Kodiak cut it to 2-1 early in the second period. But the Kards would score 47 seconds later and lead 6-1 at the end of the second period.

Seanna Swanson made 15 saves for Kenai, while Simon Lonheim had 55 for the Bears.

Will Howard and Avery Martin each had hat tricks for the Kardinals, while Logan Mese added a pair of goals and Ethan Tree added a strike.

Mese added four assists, while Martin had two. Tree, Braden Smith, Vincent Steen and Howard added assists.

Rowan Wyszkowski scored for Kodiak, assisted by Dexter Smith and Kevin Foster.

Saturday, Kodiak got on the board just 25 seconds into the game. However, Kenai would lead 3-1 by the end of the first period and lead 6-1 by the time the Bears scored their second goal of the game late in the second period.

Evyn Witt had 21 saves for the Kardinals, while Garrett Wood stopped 31 for Kodiak.

Mese and Martin filled the net with four goals for Kenai, while Howard, Tree, Toby Petty and Everett Chamberlain added tallies.

Howard added four assists, while Martin had three and Mese had two. Tree, Sawyer Vann, Cole Langham, Chamberlain and Smith added assists.

For Kodiak, Wyszkowski scored unassisted in the first period, while John Paul Pogson, assisted by Kevin Foster, had the goal in the second period.
