The Besh Cup Series concluded with Besh 5 and 6 Saturday and Sunday at Birch Hill Recreation Area in Fairbanks.

The Besh Cups are used to choose Team Alaska for the Junior Olympics, but also are used by older racers to get in some quality racing.

In Saturday’s men’s freestyle sprint for racers Under-16 and over, Karl Danielson of the Alaska Pacific University Nordic Ski Center finished 14th, with Michael Earnhart of APU taking the victory. Danielson is a 2018 graduate of Kenai Central. Andy Liebner, a 2001 graduate of Soldotna High School and one-time winner of the Besh Cup, was 25th in the sprint.

In Sunday’s men’s 10-kilometer classic mass start for U18 and older, Danielson led the way for skiers with Kenai Peninsula ties by taking sixth at 29 minutes, 39.40 seconds. Garrett Butts of Alaska Pacific University won at 27:33.00. Liebner was 11th at 30:22.10.
