SoHi, Homer hockey win 1st day of End of Road tourney

The Soldotna Stars prevailed 9-4 in an offensive shootout over Bartlett on Thursday night on the first night of the End of the Road Shootout in Homer.

SoHi quickly opened up a 3-0 lead before 10 minutes were up, then scored three more in the second period to take a commanding 7-2 lead. Galen Brantley III scored on a power play just 19 seconds into the third period to essentially ice the game.

Wyatt Medcoff notched two goals for SoHi, which also got three assists from Alex Montague. Stars goaltender McKenzie Powell stopped 29 of 33 shots on goal.

SoHi faces Houston today at 5 p.m. and finishes 12:30 p.m. Saturday against Homer.

The host team got the End of the Road Shootout off to a solid start with a victory over the Hawks.

Mariners co-captain Dimitry Kuzmin scored twice in the second period to lift Homer to a 4-1 lead after two frames of action. Tyler Gilliland opened the scoring in the first period with an assist from Charly Tappan.

Hunter Warren stopped 27 of 29 shots on goal for Homer.

The Mariners play Bartlett tonight at 7:30 p.m., then wrap up the weekend with a 12:30 p.m. Saturday tilt with Soldotna.
