Tri Nikiski draws 79 participants

The ninth annual Tri Nikiski was held Saturday starting from the Nikiski Pool.

The event drew 79 participants.

The event starts with a 500-yard swim, then a 10.6-mile bike ride, then a 5-kilometer run.

The men’s top finisher was Michael Bakker in 59 minutes, 39 seconds. Jon Iannaccone was second at 1:03:20, while Joshua Nyitrai was third at 1:15:22.

Morgan Aldridge took the top women’s spot at 1:06:48, while Elzabeth Calabro was second at 1:20:45 and Molli Sansotta was third at 1:21:10.

There also was a relay competition. Holly Boston and Melanie Briggs were first at 1:14:54, while Frieda Tuttle, Melanie Hollon and Erin Bellotte were second at 1:32:42, and Rachel Gilbert and Jason Gilbert were third at 1:51:53.

There also is a triathlon for kids ages 7 to 11. Kids have the option of a swimming 50 yards or 100 yards, then doing a 2-mile bike and 1-mile run. For the first time, kids also had the option of starting their swim by going down the slide.

Jasper Maguire won the long course at 19:07, while Olivia Dolifka was next at 22:05 and Sammy Hibberd was third at 22:26.

For the short course, Byron Jones won at 20:33, while Lily McGahan was next at 21:35 and Amelia Stone was third at 21:45.

The event is put on by The Compass, which helps the youth of Alaska navigate the teen years.
