Prep hoops roundup: Lathrop girls top Nikiski for Floyd title

The Lathrop girls basketball team defeated Nikiski 52-48 on Friday for the title at the Joe Floyd tournament in Kodiak.

Both squads came into the game 2-0 at the round-robin event. Nikiski (5-1 overall) led 15-8 after a quarter and 29-20 at halftime.

Lathrop controlled the second half, tying the game at 37 after three quarters before winning the fourth quarter.

Bethany Carstens paced the Bulldogs with 18 points, while Emma Wik had 17, Kelsey Clark had eight, Lillian Carstens had seven, Kaitlyn Johnson and Rylee Jackson had three and Kaycee Bostic and Angela Druesdow each had two.

Kodiak boys 61, Nikiski 57

The Bears finished the game on a 15-6 kick to top the Bulldogs at the round-robin Joe Floyd tournament in Kodiak on Friday.

Nikiski finished 0-3 at the tourney.

The Bulldogs led 18-12 after the first quarter, 36-30 at halftime and 51-46 after three quarters.

But Ian Johnson, who had 20 points for the Bulldogs, fouled out and Kodiak made clutch plays down the stretch. After Nikiski’s Michael Eiter cut Kodiak’s lead to 57-55 with 1:36 left, Louis Rocheleau made a pair of foul shots with 14 seconds left for a 59-55 lead.

Jace Kornstad, who had 26 for Nikiski, quickly came down and cut the lead to 59-57, but Rocheleau made two more free throws with 6.7 seconds left to ice the win.

Lake Stevens boys 72, Soldotna 36

The Stars ended up taking sixth place in the boys “Slam” Division at the San Diego Surf ‘N’ Slam Tournament on Saturday by losing to the squad from Washington.

The “Slam” Division was the medium ability bracket at the tournament, which had three separate brackets. Jersey Truesdell had nine points to lead the Stars, while Caleb Spence and Luke Trammell each pitched in eight.

Kenai girls 55, Wrangell 46

The Kardinals wrapped up seventh place at the 2017 Clarke Cochrane Christmas Classic in Ketchikan by defeating the Wolves.

Brooke Satathite announced her return to the court by scoring 31 points to key the victory. Thursday, Satathite left the game in the second quarter due to an ankle injury. She then missed Friday’s contest with the injury.

Wrangell led 10-8 after the first quarter before the Kards tied it at 21 heading into halftime. Kenai then won the third quarter 22-15 and the fourth quarter 12-10.

Anna Allen had 16 points for the Wolves, while Kaylyn Easterly had 13 and Maddy Harding added 11.

Navajo Prep girls 49, Kenai 39

The Eagles came up with a big fourth quarter to beat the Kardinals on Friday and move into the fourth-sixth-place game of the 2017 Clarke Cochrane Christmas Classic in Ketchikan.

Kenai moved to a matchup with Wrangell in the seventh-eighth-place game.

The Kardinals, playing without star Brooke Satathite due to an ankle injury sustained Thursday, led the prep school in Farmington, New Mexico, by the count of 14-10 after the first quarter. But Navajo came back for a 24-20 lead at halftime.

Kenai got back out in front — 35-34 — after three quarters before the Eagles took control.

Martinique Larvingo had 16 points for Navajo Prep. Jaycie Calvert had 11 points, including three 3-pointers, to lead the Kardinals.
