Nikiski girls to play for Southcentral title

The Nikiski girls earned a state berth and a spot in the Southcentral Conference tournament championship with a 60-47 victory over Grace Christian on Friday in Seward.

The Bulldogs trailed 16-15 after the first quarter, but had a 28-21 lead by halftime and a 45-31 lead after three quarters.

Bethany Carstens paced Nikiski with 26 points, while Emma Wik added 10 points. For Grace, Grace Salima had 22, while Tessa Binder had 16.

ACS girls 63, Kenai 23

The Lions used stifling defense to top the Kards and gain the championship game.

ACS plays Nikiski at 3:45 p.m. for the title, while Kenai and Grace play for third at noon.

Destiny Reimers had 21 points to lead the Lions, while MyKaila Pickard had 11. Brooke Satathite had 12 points for Kenai.

Grace boys 55, Kenai 41

The Grizzlies toppled the Kardinals to earn a spot in the championship game.

Grace plays ACS for the title at 5:30 p.m., while Seward and Kenai play for third place at 1:45 p.m.

The game was tied at 11 after a quarter, but Grace led 30-18 at halftime. Kenai cut the gap to 35-30 after three quarters.

Turner Goforth had 25 points for the Grizzlies. For Kenai, Adam Trujillo had 13 points, while Evan Stockton had 11 and Tyrone McEnerney had 10.

ACS boys 57, Seward 35

The Lions led 17-7 after a quarter and 35-12 at the half to gain the championship game.

ACS will play Grace at 5:30 p.m. for the championship. Seward plays Kenai at 1:45 p.m. for third place.

Orlando Leizano had 18 points for ACS, while Frederick Onochie added 11. For Seward, Max Pfeiffenberger led the way with nine points.

Homer girls 41, Houston 40

The Mariners nipped the Hawks on Friday to earn a spot in the fourth-place game.

Homer will play Redington at 8:15 a.m.

Homer jumped out to a 14-3 lead after the first quarter and then held on as the Hawks won the rest of the quarters, trailing 18-8 at halftime and 28-23 after three quarters.

Laura Inama led the way for the Mariners with 17 points. For Houston, Emily Bitler had 14 points and Mary Graham added 10.

Redington girls 49, Seward 33

The Huskies eliminated the Seahawks to move into the fourth-place game.

Redington will play Homer at 8:15 a.m. Saturday.

Abbie Fuller had 18 for Redington, while Lexi Seymore added 14. Riley Von Borstel had 12 points for the Seahawks.

Homer boys 57, Houston 32

The Mariners ousted the Hawks from the tournament by controlling the entire game.

Homer led 15-9 after a quarter, 28-15 at halftime and 41-21 after three quarters.

Japheth McGhee had 16 points for Homer, while Tolupo Falaniko and Gavin Mulhaney had eight apiece for the Hawks.

Homer will face Nikiski in the fourth-sixth place game at 10 a.m. Saturday.

Nikiski boys 65, Redington 38

A stifling defensive effort in the first half pushed the Bulldogs past the Huskies on Friday.

Nikiski led 7-2 after a quarter and 27-10 at halftime. Redington is out of the tourney, while Nikiski plays Homer for fourth place at 10 a.m. Saturday.

The Bulldogs had nine 3-pointers, and Jace Kornstad had three of them on the way to 24 points. Cody Handley pitched in 13 for Nikiski. For Redington, Wayde Bowman had 16 points while Tony Rogers had 10.
