Local athletes sweep North Pole Triathlon

The central Kenai Peninsula swept the top spots at the North Pole Triathlon on Saturday at the Chena Lakes Recreation Area.

Sterling’s Morgan Aldridge, 40, and Kenai’s Jon Iannaccone, 51, earned the victories. The race involves a swim of 1,500 meters in open water, a bike of 13 miles on wide, park trails, and a run of 6 miles on a combination of paved and gravel trails in the Chena Lake Recreation Area.

Aldridge won at 2 hours, 14 minutes and 43 seconds, topping the 2:15:51 of runner-up Pamela Schamber. Aldridge was dominant in the bike leg, clocking 54:02, with no other biker finishing under an hour.

Iannaccone won at 2:07:07, while runner-up Derek Scozzafava was at 2:09:11. Iannaccone was second in the bike leg and second in the run leg on the way to the title.
