Soldotna wins Ice Challenge behind goalie Tanner Clyde

The Soldotna hockey team won the Peninsula Ice Challenge with a 3-0 victory over Kenai Central on Saturday at the Kenai Multi-Purpose Facility.

The Stars won the title with a 3-0 record. Kenai, Houston and Service all finished 1-2. Also at the multi-purpose facility Saturday, Service defeated Houston 5-4 in overtime.

Tanner Clyde had a 25-save shutout in net for the Stars. Clyde also had the shutout Thursday against Service. Friday against Houston, Clyde entered after the Hawks had scored three goals and didn’t allow a goal the rest of the way.

“Tanner Clyde was lights out,” Soldotna coach Anthony Zurfluh wrote in a text message.

Zurfluh said Clyde played 8.5 periods without allowing a goal. He added that’s pretty tough to do against forwards like Houston’s Daniel Matveev and Kenai’s Logan Mese.

The Stars scored in each of the periods against the Kards.

In the first period, Jace Applehans scored on assists from Boone Theiler and Andrew Arthur.

Applehans scored again in the second, this time on assists from Theiler and Daniel Heath.

In the third, Payton Williams scored with help from Theiler and Applehans.

Seanna Swanson had 27 saves for the Kardinals.
