SoHi hockey tops Juneau; Kenai falls to West

The West hockey team defeated Kenai Central 9-2 in nonconference action on senior night at the Kenai Multi-Purpose Facility.

The Kardinals (6-11-0) received both goals from Logan Mese, with Avery Martin assisting on the first and Landen Cialek assisting on the second.

The Kardinals honored seniors Cialek, Reagan Graves, Caden Warren, Josiah Petty, Zach Rogerss, Ky Calvert, Celina Martinez, Ransom Hayes, Jaden Gardner, Mavrick Gabriel and Jayden Sandahl. Gabriel and Sandahl were at a junior varsity tournament in Palmer.

Kenai coach Scott Shelden said the 11 seniors are out of 42 in the program. That number is up from 25 last year due to a bunch of freshmen and first-year sophomores.

Soldotna 3, Juneau-Douglas 1

The visiting Soldotna hockey team topped the Crimson Bears on Friday in Railbelt Conference action to move to 4-1 in the league and 7-5-2 overall.

All of the scoring came in the second period.

After Caden Johns gave the Crimson Bears a 1-0 lead at the 12:37 mark, Blake Bucho, assisted by Mykah Booth, struck back for Soldotna a little over two minutes later.

With 6:39 left in the period, Gehret Medcoff gave the Stars the lead for good with help from Daniel Heath. Andrew Arthur, again from Heath, finished the scoring.

Tanner Clyde saved 16 to get the win for SoHi, while Mason Sooter stopped 29 for Juneau.

SoHi coach Anthony Zurfluh said it was a total team victory, with nobody standing out.
