Kenai hockey wins as Homer program returns to ice

The visiting Kenai Central hockey team defeated Homer 9-1 in nonconference action Friday night.

The Mariners lost their first game since taking the 2022-23 season off. The Kardinals improved to 2-2 overall.

Logan Mese had three goals and three assists to power the Kardinals, while Seanna Swanson made nine saves in net. Blaze Banks had 34 saves for Homer.

The Kardinals took a 2-0 lead after the first period when Avery Martin scored with help from Mese, then Will Howard scored on Ethan Tree and Mese assists.

The Kardinals tacked on three more goals by the 8:29 mark of the second period. Mese scored on a Cole Langham assist, Isaac Potton scored on Toby Petty and Mese assists, and Petty scored unassisted.

With 8:14 left in the second, River Henry got Homer on the board with an unassisted goal.

Martin and Mese, both unassisted, would then score before the second period was over.

In the third period, Howard had a power-play goal assisted by Mese and Sawyer Vann and Mese scored unassisted.
