The host Homer baseball team defeated Soldotna 8-0 on Monday in Northern Lights Conference play.

The Mariners moved to 3-3 overall and 1-2 in the league, while SoHi fell to 0-3 overall and 0-3 in the league.

“We came out real flat and gave up five runs in the first inning,” SoHi coach Robb Quelland said.

The Stars also had eight errors in the game, including six in the first two innings.

That was more than enough for Homer pitcher Kyle Johnson, who had the complete-game shutout.

Michael Swoboda also was 2 for 4 with two runs to lead Homer at the plate. Quelland said Homer catcher Greg Smith also made a big difference by controlling Soldotna’s running game.

Joey Becher took the loss for the Stars, lasting an inning. After that, Tyler Covey came on and Quelland said he did a great job, giving up three runs the rest of the way.

Calvin Hills was 2 for 3 with a double for Soldotna, while Trayton Bird was 1 for 3 and Davie Rue was 1 for 2 with a walk.
