Endurance roundup: Pikes Peak Ascent, Chainwreck Cyclocross, Equinox Marathon

Allie Ostrander, a 2015 graduate of Kenai Central now living in Seattle, finished 20th among women Saturday at the Pikes Peak Ascent in Manitou Springs, Colorado.

The race starts at 6,300 feet of elevation then travels 13.3 miles and 7,815 feet up to finish at 14,115 feet.

The women’s victory went to Sophia Laukli in 2 hours, 35 minutes and 54 seconds. Laukli skis on the World Cup for the United States.

Ostrander finished at 3:04:47, one place behind the 3:02:12 of fellow Mount Marathon Race champion Jessica Yeaton, who grew up in Anchorage and now lives in Colorado.

Colorado’s Allie McLaughlin, who lives in Colorado and owns the MMR women’s record, was 12th in 2:53:19.

The men’s race went to Remi Bonnet of Switzerland in a record time of 2:00:20. Four-time MMR men’s champ David Norris of Colorado was 29th in 2:28:28.

Tyler Hippchen, a 2022 graduate of Kenai Central, was 84th among men at 3:09:05.

Chainwreck Cyclocross Series

Nels Dahl and Morgan Aldridge won the second week of the Chainwreck Cyclocross Series on Thursday at the Slikok Trails.

In this cyclocross series, racers compete on a 1.5- to 2-mile course that includes obstacles forcing the riders to dismount and mount the bike. The leader does as many laps as possible in 30 minutes, and nobody starts another lap after the leader finishes.

Dahl did six laps in 32:29 for the win. Also with six laps were Brian Beeson at 34:46, C.O. Rudstrom at 35:23, Aldridge at 35:30, Jamie Nelson at 36:37, Shane Lopez at 38:11 and Tor Dahl at 38:18.

Finishing with five laps were Cassie Collins at 33:48, Dan Keck at 35:17, Lance Sego at 36:24, Raven Smith at 36:34 and Mitch Sego at 38:27.

Patty Moran had four laps in 34:24. Finishing with three laps were Kelly Sederholm in 28:58, Brennan Keck at 32:58 and Edmond Keck at 36:00. Jon Iannaccone had a lap at 9:14.

The series continues Thursday, with registration at 5:45 p.m. and racing at 6:15 p.m. Check Tsalteshi’s Facebook page for the exact location.

Equinox Marathon

Palmer’s Christy Marvin won the 60th Equinox Marathon on Saturday in Fairbanks for the seventh time — the most victories in race history.

Marvin was previously tied with Stan Justice, Bob Murphy and Matias Saari. Marvin, who finished at 3:19:53, completed an impressive summer during which she also won the Mount Marathon Race and Crow Pass Crossing.

Juneau’s Zack Bursell won the men’s race in 2:57:07 for his first victory.

From the peninsula in the women’s marathon, Homer’s Yvonne Leutwyler was 83rd in 5:45:23. From the peninsula in the men’s marathon, Kenai’s Daniel Linnell was 26th in 3:58:11 and Soldotna’s Todd Murdoch was 66th in 4:37:31.

In the women’s half marathon, Seward’s Milissa Lewis was 10th in 1:50:03, Soldotna’s Angie Brennan was 46th in 2:18:33 and Sterling’s Julie Cisco was 118th in 3:10:24.
