Kenai Peninsula wrestlers will seek state berths today and Saturday at conference tournaments.

Soldotna will compete at the Division I Northern Lights Conference tournament in Kodiak, while Kenai Central, Nikiski, Homer and Seward will compete at the Division II Kachemak Conference tournament at Houston.

In Kodiak, wrestling starts today at 11 a.m., with the semifinals set for 6:30 p.m. On Saturday, wrestling starts at 10 a.m., with third- and fifth-place matches at 1 p.m. and the finals starting at 5 p.m.

In Houston, wrestling starts at 2 p.m. today and at 9 a.m. Saturday.

At the Kachemak Conference tournament, the top three wrestlers from each weight class qualify for the Division II state tournament, to be held Dec. 17 and 18 at the Alaska Airlines Center in Anchorage.

At the ACS Denali Auto Glass Invite in early November, generally considered a good preview of the pecking order in Division II, Redington Sr. Jr/Sr High School was first with 150.5 points, while Grace Christian was second at 125.

Both of those schools are in the Kachemak Conference. In May 2021, in a season delayed by the coronavirus pandemic, Redington stopped Homer’s five-year run atop the conference.

At the Northern Lights Conference tournament, the top five wrestlers in each weight class advance to Division I state, which will be Dec. 17 and 18 at the Alaska Airlines Center in Anchorage.

Colony has been the top Division I team all season, making the Knights the favorite to win the NLC. Colony won the team title in May, with Soldotna taking third.
