SST competition slated for today

The strongest, fastest and most agile high school athletes will be put to the test today at 6 p.m. at Soldotna High School when the Speed and Strength Training competition kicks off for a fourth year in a row.

SST is a biannual event, with two separate competitions being contested in a single academic year. last October, students from Kenai Central, Soldotna and Nikiski all competed at Kenai in events ranging from the 40-yard dash to a straight vertical jump event.

Today, the same three schools will put their top athletes to the test in the clean, snatch and back squat events. Each discipline is separated into four classificiations; freshman and sophomore girls, freshman and sophomore boys, junior and senior girls and junior and senior boys.

The day will be capped by one of the toughest competitions, the Fight Gone Bad, in which athletes work to pile up as many reps as they can in 10 minutes in five separate events — box jumps, kettleball swings, push presses, ball slams and wall balls.
