Seward girls, Homer boys take borough cross-country titles

Homer’s Bynagle, Seward’s Jordan capture individual crowns

The Seward girls and Homer boys won the Kenai Peninsula Borough meet Thursday at Homer High School.

On the girls side, the Seahawks scored 24 points to top the 39 of Homer, the 70 of Kenai Central and the 98 of Soldotna.

The Homer boys nearly pulled off a perfect score with 19 points, with Seward in second at 57, Soldotna in third at 84 and Kenai Central in fourth at 86.

Seward freshman Olive Jordan ran the 5-kilometer course in 21 minutes, 36 seconds, to take the victory over runner-up Beatrix McDonough of Homer, who was at 22:22.

Also scoring for the Seahawks were Juniper Ingalls in third at 22:31, Sadie Haas in fourth at 22:35, Katie Van Buskirk in seventh at 22:51 and Selah Brueckner in ninth at 23:23.

Homer also got top-10 finishes from Claira Booz in sixth at 22:37 and Etta Bynagle in eighth at 23:00.

Teresa Fallon led Kenai by finishing fifth at 22:36, while Ruby Davis was 10th in 23:30.

SoHi’s top finisher was Eva Abel in 15th at 24:27. Many of the Stars’ top runners did not compete at the meet because the team will compete in Kodiak on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 20 and 21.

On the boys side, Bynagle ran 17:41 as the Mariners took six of the top seven places. The only one to break up Homer hegemony was Kenai’s Chase Laker, the runner-up at 18:18.

Also for Homer, Reid Rauch was third at 18:23, Tait Ostrom was fourth at 18:39, Jai Badajos was fifth at 18:43, Landon Tinsley was sixth at 19:07 and Charlie Rustand was seventh at 19:09.

Noah Crabtree led SoHi in eighth at 19:13, while Seward’s Ridge Conant and Luke Elhard both ran 19:17 to finish ninth and 10th, respectively.

All of the teams will next be in action Saturday, Sept. 28, at the Region 3 meet at Wasilla, with varsity racing starting at 1:30 p.m.

Soldotna will compete in the Region 3/Division I meet. The top three teams at the meet qualify for state. Individual runners not part of a qualifying team can also qualify by finishing in the overall top 15.

Homer, Kenai and Seward will compete at Division II. There, the top four teams and top 15 overall qualify for state.
