Runners, cyclists take on Mineshaft Grinder

The Mineshaft Grinder was put on in Hope by the Kenai Mountains-Turnagain Arm National Heritage Area on Saturday.

The event features a Gold Grinder and a Silver Grinder. The Gold Grinder is an uphill-only race for riders that gains 1,900 feet in over 11 miles on Palmer Creek Road. The Silver Grinder is an out-and-back half marathon on Palmer Creek Road.

The Gold Grinder women’s cycle race was won by Sterling’s Morgan Aldridge in 1 hour, 2 minutes and 17 seconds, with Pam Schamber second at 1:02:38 and Gilia DeGange third in 1:04:30.

Anna Boltz was the lone women’s paracylcist, finishing in 1:10:46.

The men’s cycle race went to David Kingston in 57:48, with Bradley Cruz second at 1:02:12 and Corky Still third at 1:02:14.

There were three men’s paracyclists — Kevin Jackson in 55:02, Jim Beck in 1:13:07 and Michael Hanson in 1:13:47.

The Silver Grinder women’s winner was Katie Melvin in 2:09:21, with Kathy Jacobsen next at 2:23:26 and Kathy Trinh third at 2:40:37.

For the men, Mark Snyder won at 2:09:22, while Mark Jacobsen was second at 2:10:46 and Duwayne Ruzicka was third at 2:20:37.

There also were most improved awards for the Gold Grinder and Silver Grinder. In the Gold Grinder, Beck improved his time by 1:32:26 to take the top spot, while in the Silver Grinder Trinh improved the most by lowering her time by 4:12.

Soldotna’s Tania Boonstra took first place for the girls’ division, leading her team to victory at the meet. The Homer girls’ varsity team placed second overall.
