Hoops roundup: Kenai girls win Nome Subway Showdown

The Kenai Central girls basketball team defeated Nome 38-26 on Saturday to win the Nome Subway Showdown.

The Kardinals, behind tournament MVP Emma Beck and all-tourney player Chloe Goldsby, also moved to 6-0. Kenai also won the sportsmanship award at the tournament.

Beck pumped in 24 for the Kardinals on Saturday, while Goldsby had nine, Rylie Sparks had three and Ella Yragui had two.

For Nome, Asa Hukill had 11, Ayla Knodel had six, Kamylee Walters had four, Natallie Tobuk had three and Benny Lie had two.

Nome boys 53, Kenai 44

The Kardinals (4-2 overall) finished second at the Nome Subway Showdown after falling Saturday. Jakob Kvasnikoff made the all-tournament team for Kenai.

Kvasnikoff had 19 against Nome, while Wade James had 10, Roc Riggle had six, Bridger Beck had three and Luke Armstrong and Carnell Gump each chipped in two.

Jade Greene poured in 28 points for Nome, while Finn Gregg had 14 and Richard Cross added 11.

Grace Christian girls 57, Soldotna 29

The Stars finished 0-3 in the Mt. McKinley Classic and also dropped to 2-4 overall.

For SoHi, Josie Sheridan and Morgan Lemm each had seven points, while Tanner Inman had four and Anaulie Sedivy and Katelyn Morrison each had two.

For the Grizzlies, Ella Boerger had 20, Sophie Lentfer had 17, Poppy Wiggers-Pidduck had nine, Kailee Waythomas had seven and M.J. Van der Horst had four.

Sheridan made the all-tourney team for the Stars.

Grace Christian boys 62, Soldotna 39

The Stars finished 0-3 in the Mt. McKinley Classic in Fairbanks and are 1-6 overall after the loss to the Grizzlies.

Jakob Brown, who made the all-tournament team, led Soldotna with 14 points. Also for SoHi, Zac Buckbee had seven, Andrew Pieh had six, Lokeni Wong had four, and Will Iman and Izaiah Gilbert each had three.

CIA JV/V girls 43, Homer JV/C 25

The Eagles picked up the nonconference victory Saturday in Homer.

Hope Hillyer poured in 29 points for Cook Inlet Academy, while Clare Warren had nine, Ella Rollman had four and Kaitlyn Liles had one.

For the Mariners, Immi Im led the way with 16.

Homer JV boys 63, CIA 62

The host Mariners picked up a nonconference win Saturday as the Eagles dropped to 3-2.

For the Eagles, Ian McGarry had 34, Abraham Henderson had 11, Jeremiah Dillingham had six, Alek McGarry had five, Jonas Oyoumick had three and Brady Baeten had three.
