Homer’s Story stars at state club meet

Homer senior Madison Story won two individual titles Saturday at the Alaska State High School Invite at Bartlett High School in Anchorage.

With the Alaska School Activities Association canceling the state swim meet due to the new coronavirus pandemic, Central Area Swimming stepped in to organize a fully mitigated competition for high school age club swimmers in Alaska.

Story, who recently signed a National Letter of Intent to swim at Division I Utah, helped lead the Mariners to third in the meet. Dimond was first with 103 points, while Homer had 57 and Seward was 15th.

On the boys side, Service won with 96 points, while Kenai was 10th.

Story won the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2 minutes, 6.03 seconds. Then, with one of the nation’s top junior breaststrokers in Seward junior Lydia Jacoby off touring colleges, Story also won the 100 breaststroke in 1:04.22.

Story also teamed with Carly Nelson, Adeline Berry and Hannah Overdorf to take second in the 200 medley relay at 1:50.71 and third in the 200 free relay at 1:41.21. Dimond won the 200 medley relay at 1:50.00.

Nelson also was fifth in the 200 individual medley at 2:14.26 and fifth in the 100 butterfly at 59.62, while Berry was sixth in the 100 butterfly at 59.86. Seward’s Mia Nappi was fifth in the 100 breaststroke at 1:08.91.

Koda Poulin and Owen Rolph led the effort for the Kenai boys. Rolph was third in the 100 butterfly at 53.70 seconds and sixth in the 50 freestyle at 22.53 seconds, while Poulin was third in the 500 freestyle at 5:03.18 and sixth in the 200 IM at 2:06.64.
