Homer volleyball tops Nikiski

The visiting Homer volleyball defeated Nikiski 25-15, 25-19, 23-25 and 25-19 on Wednesday in Southcentral Conference action.

The Mariners move to 2-0 overall and 1-0 in the league, while the Bulldogs fall to 0-1 in the league and 0-3 overall.

Nikiski coach Stacey Segura has a young team in terms of experience. She said her squad gets better and better with more match play.

“The girls played so well tonight,” Segura wrote in a text message. “We focused on positivity, playing with a purpose and hard work, and the team demonstrated that perfectly.

“They stayed together the whole game. I couldn’t have asked any more from them. If they continue to play like that, we’ll be in good shape for regions.”

Segura wrote Ariel VanZandt, Jaycee Tauriainen and Savanna Stock all played big roles in the match.

VanZandt had seven kills and seven blocks for the Bulldogs, while Tauriainen had 15 digs, 10 assists and seven kills, and Stock had seven kills.

Also for the Bulldogs, Maylisa Hodges had 19 digs, Rylee Ellis had 10 digs and four kills, and Savanna Stock had seven kills.
