Hagelund claims NAIA national title; Brantley III, Dahlgren nab All-American status

Soldotna High School graduate Adarra Hagelund, competing for Dickinson (North Dakota) State, won the high jump at the NAIA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Marion, Indiana, on Friday.

Hagelund was the only one in the field to clear 5 feet, 9 inches, as she won her first national title.

She also helped the Blue Hawks women to fourth place overall at the meet, which is the top finish in program history.

Hagelund came into the meet with the top seed thanks to a leap of 5 feet, 10.75 inches earlier in the season. That mark stands as third in NAIA outdoor history, as well as the top high jump in Alaska history and in Dickinson State history.

Two other SoHi graduates competing for Dickinson State also earned All-American honors at the meet.

Wednesday, Dylan Dahlgren finished fourth in the hammer throw with a mark of 196 feet, 8 inches, to earn All-America status. That increased his previous PR of 193—10.

Friday, SoHi graduate Galen Brantley III finished seventh in the shot put with a mark of 56—6.75 to take seventh. Brantley III ended his career by increasing his personal best from 55 feet, 7.5 inches.

In mid-May, Brantley III won the Harry J. Wienbergen Male Senior Athlete of the Year at Dickinson State.

“Galen had a tremendous career as a multi-sport athlete for the Blue Hawks,” athletic director Pete Stanton said in a released statement. “In football, he was a four-year starter, earning all-conference honors twice as a tight end and serving as our long snapper.

“After a season-ending injury cut short his football career, he showed remarkable resilience by returning just months later to earn All-American honors in indoor track. Galen’s work ethic, character and drive to succeed are truly admirable.”

Brantley III will now attend medical school at the University of North Dakota.
