Saturday soccer: Kenai splits with Palmer; Houston boys topple Nikiski

The Kenai Central soccer teams split with Palmer on a Saturday senior day in nonconference action at Ed Hollier Field in Kenai.

The Kardinals girls won 7-0 to finish the regular season at 11-3 overall.

Brynnen Hanson had a hat trick for Kenai, while Christine Goering added a pair of goals. Ellee Pancoast and Katie Johnson also found the back of the net.

The seniors honored for Kenai were Tait Cooper, Sarah Baisden, Kate Wisnewski, Johnson (a junior graduating early), Pancoast, Alexis Taylor, Seanna Swanson, Maddie Malone, Christine Goering, Flokarta Hoxha and Cemre Akgul.

The Moose boys took a 2-1 decision off Kenai as the Kards finish the regular season at 9-6-2. Palmer went up 1-0 20 minutes into the game, but Kenai head coach Shane Lopez wrote in a text message that Sawyer Vann had a scrappy goal in the 36th minute to get the Kards back in the game.

The Moose scored off a long throw-in in the 65th minute for the game-winner.

Lopez wrote Enrique Mercado, Cole Langham and Carson Grimm controlled the midfield and built up the offense.

Mercado, Grimm, Langham and Vann were honored on senior night, along with Ryker Dykema, Dakota Wisnewski, Robert Hayes, Zane James, Gavin Liles, Ben Harris and Roman Mosquito.

Houston boys 15, Nikiski 0

The host Bulldogs finished 0-10 overall with the Saturday nonconference loss to the Hawks.

Nikiski coach Horst Haunold wrote in a text message that the Bulldogs were short players on defense. Nikiski was down 3-0 at the half.

Haunold said Dylan Hall, Frank Nasibog, Emily Brannen and Jayden Anderson stood out this season for his team.
