Friday soccer roundup: Kenai sweeps Grace; Nikiski girls tie Houston

The Kenai Central girls soccer team defeated Grace Christian 4-0 on Friday in nonconference action at Ed Hollier Field at Kenai Central.

The Kardinals are 9-0-0 overall. Maddie Malone had the shutout.

Seven minutes in, Chloe Goldsby scored from 10 yards out by sneaking one in on the near post. In the 25th minute, Kylee Verkuilen made it 2-0 when she collected a rebound off her own shot and scored.

Kenai kept applying pressure in the second half and made it 3-0 when Chloe Grimm threw the ball in to Verkuilen. Verkuilen spun and put one into the upper right corner from 25 yards out.

With five minutes to play, Kori Moore finished the scoring when she finished a cross from Alexis Taylor.

Kenai coach Dan Verkuilen wrote in a text message it was a good team effort. In addition to the normal leaders, Verkuilen wrote Tait Cooper, Grace Beiser and Brynnen Hanson stood out.

Kenai boys 1, Grace 0

The Kardinals moved to 6-2-2 overall with the home nonconference victory over the Grizzlies.

Ezekiel Yragui had the shutout in net, while Kenai coach Shane Lopez also credited Daniel Shelden, Landen Cialek, Ky Calvert and Dakota Wisnewski for strong games on defense.

Lopez wrote in a text message the Kards were able to limit chances and control the pace of the game.

The breakthrough goal for the Kards came from Carson Grimm.

Nikiski girls 3, Houston 3

The host Bulldogs are now 2-4-1 after the nonconference draw with the Hawks on Friday.

Savanna Stock had a pair of goals for the Bulldogs, while Shelby McGahan Burman added a strike.

Nikiski coach Angie Coelho wrote in a text message it was a great game and a physical game. The coach wrote that Avery White and Maddison Iyatunguk held the midfield well.

Houston boys 5, Nikiski 2

The host Bulldogs fell to 0-5-0 with the nonconference loss.

Nikiski boys coach Horst Haunold wrote in a text message that this was one of his team’s best games. The Bulldogs only had 10 players, so the Hawks also elected to play with 10. Haunold wrote he very much appreciated the gesture.

Miles Broussard and Braeden Porter had the goals for Nikiski.
