Friday hoops roundup: Ninilchik boys topple Homer

Kade McCorison erupted for 44 points as the host Ninilchik boys basketball team defeated Homer 81-56 in nonconference action Friday.

Ninilchik is 5-4 overall, while the Mariners are 1-6.

The Wolverines, who are the size of a Class 1A school but play at the Class 2A level, got by the Class 3A Mariners by getting four 3-pointers and a 10 of 14 performance from the foul line from McCorison, a junior.

Andon McCorison, only an eighth-grader, joined in with 18 points on four 3-pointers, while Brandt Mill had 10, Max Russell had 7 and Onyx Allen had 2.

For Homer, Einar Pederson had 14, Ben Engebretsen had 10, CJ Burns had 9, Graham Plumke had 6, Henry Wedvik had 4, Kaiden Bogie and Jamen Anderosn had 3, and Spencer Dye and Weston Marley had 2.

Rus Hitchcock Nikiski Tip Off

The Redington and Kotzebue girls and boys both swept victories Friday at the 36th Annual Rus Hitchcock Nikiski Tip Off Tournament.

The Kotzebue girls knocked off Nikiski 52-41 as the Bulldogs fell to 1-6. Blakeley Jorgensen hit for 23 for Nikiski, while Avery Ellis had 8, Kailey Stynsberg had 5, Falesha Anderson had 3 and Addison Perkins had 2.

For Kotzebue, McKenzie Swanson and Elizabeth Brown had 16, Caliana Sheldon had 10, Pauline McCall had 6, and Mylie McConnell had 4.

Ayden Wesley had a monster game for the Kotzebue boys as they defeated Nikiski 73-60, with the Bulldogs falling to 0-7. Wesley finished with 40 points, Uriel Zuniga Barron adding 19, and Benjamin Marcus and John Tikik each pitching in 7.

Kameron Bird paced the Bulldogs with 21 points, while Carter Eiter had 16, Kevin Love had 12, Dylan Hall had 6 and Lynn Deveer had 5.

The Redington girls collected a 36-12 victory over Ninilchik, dropping the Wolverines to 2-5.

Caelis Cress had 5 for the Wolverines, while Lucy Reynolds had 4 and Kate Hendryx had 3.

For Redington, Abi Dagomos had 15, Ari Collini had 8, Janessa Gubler had 5, Sonia Gerike had 4, and Daisy Cardoso and Caydence Nunley each had 2.

In other Friday tournament action, Redington defeated Dimond JV 42-40.

Tri-Valley Winter Classic

The Cook Inlet Academy girls and boys basketball teams lost to Shaktoolik in the semifinals of the Tri-Valley Winter Classic on Friday and fell to the third-place game.

The Eagles girls took a 75-16 loss to Shaktoolik and are 6-3 overall.

The Cook Inlet boys fell to Shaktoolik for a second time this season, this time 64-41. As was the case last time, the Eagles (7-3) didn’t have Alek McGarry in a battle of two of the top Class 1A teams in the state.

CIA head coach Ben McGarry said in a text message his team did not shoot well and had too many turnovers.

Ian McGarry had 19 for CIA, while Brandt Rollman had 7, Owen Braband and Zach Armstrong had 4, Silas Barnes had 3, and Matthew Phillips and Lucas Oyoumick had 2.

Seth Paniptchuk had 19 for Shaktoolik, while Ryan Evan had 11, Chase Katchatag and Mason Paniptchuk had 10, Kay Sagoonick had 8, Devin Rock had 4 and Bryce Patterson had 2.

Bethel Tournament

The Seward girls and boys swept Galena on Friday to move to 2-0 at the tournament.

The Seahawks girls won 50-27 to move to 5-2 overall. Mikinley Williams pumped in 18 to lead Seward, while Ava Jagielski had 9, Addison Lemme and Natalie Sieminski had 6, Lia Shank and Grace Fleming had 4, and Sevin Phillips had 3.

For Galena, Madison Andrew and Tieran Ignatius each had 10, while Marylene Burgett had 5.

The Seward boys won 78-46 to move to 4-3 overall. Lane Peterson had 16, while Mason Elhard, Noah Price, Emerson Cross and Talon Lemme had 11, Lane Peterson had 8, Jack Lindquist had 5 and Hunter Price had 3.

For Galena, Carson Unok had 13, Aloysius George had 11, Drey Schaeffer had 9, Camden Cleaver had 6, Hayden Huntington had 4 and Shane Ozenna had 3.

Grace girls 58, Kenai 11

The host Grace girls notched a Peninsula Conference victory over the Kardinals on Friday. Kenai is 1-1 in the league and 4-5 overall.

For the Kardinals, Willow Graham had 6, Evelyn Cooper had 3, and Sierra Hershberger and Gracee Every each had 1.

For Grace, MJ Van der horst had 18, Sophie Lentfer had 16, Ella Boerger had 10, Faith Salima had 4, Jaden Helton and Poppy Wiggers-Pidduck had 3, and Hope Jackson and Molly Schild had 2.

Barrow boys 72, Kenai 43

The host Whalers rolled to a nonconference victory Friday. The Kardinals are 5-4 overall.

Caleb Litke led Kenai with 13, while Miles Metteer had 10, Reid Titus had 8, Riel Castillo had 6, Eli Smith had 4 and Mason Tunseth had 2.

For Barrow, Alex Fruean filled up the scoring column with 27, while Eric Librado, Jaziah Tirzo and Dwight Unotoa had 8, Lennox Dias had 6, Hunter Wilhelm had 5, Blade Donoven had 4, and John Adams, Brewster Fields and Darren Salazar had 2.
