Thursday hoops: Seward, CIA teams start tourneys with wins

The Seward girls and boys basketball teams defeated Susitna Valley on Thursday at the Bethel Tournament.

The Seward girls topped the Rams 54-23 to move to 4-2 overall.

Mikinley Williams pumped in 14 points for the Seahawks, while Natalie Sieminiski had 13, Lia Shank and Ava Jagielski each had 8, Grace Fleming had 6, and Addison Lemme and Sevin Phillips each had 2.

For Su Valley, Poppy Moren had 9, Ashley Delima had 4, Jayden Sliker, Lily Esmailka and Amanda Lankard had 3, and Maura McDaniel had 1.

The Seward boys defeated Su Valley 59-43 to move to 3-3 overall.

Mason Elhard paced Seward with 15 points, while Van Shank had 14 and Emerson Cross had 11. Also, Talon Lemme had 9, Noah Price had 6 and Lane Peterson had 4.

For the Rams, Austin Barnard had 12, Miles Osmand had 11, Owen Drumm, Landon Ballard and Douglas Drover had 6, and Earl Davidson had 2.

Tri-Valley Winter Classic

The Cook Inlet Academy girls and boys basketball teams picked up victories Thursday at the Tri-Valley Winter Classic.

The CIA boys topped Nunamiut 63-38 to move to 7-2 overall. The Eagles move on to play Shaktoolik at 4:30 p.m. Friday.

CIA head coach Ben McGarry wrote in a text message that the team started slow, but came on, especially on defense, in the third and early fourth quarters.

With Alek McGarry out due to injury, Ben McGarry said Zach Armstrong and Hyrum Henderson made great contributions.

Ian McGarry poured in 30 for CIA, while Armstrong had 12, Brandt Rollman had 7, Matthew Phillips had 5, and Silas Barnes, John Guerra and Henderson each had 3.

The Eagles girls topped Nunamiut 46-30 to move to 6-2 overall.

Ella Rollman had 20 to lead the Eagles, including 12 in the first quarter. Also, Beka Dillingham had 9, Sophie Rozak had 6, Maria Smith had 4, Kristi Stoll had 3 and Isabella Porsi had 2.
