The host Soldotna softball team lost 12-1 to Colony in five innings Friday before defeating Wasilla 8-6 on Saturday.
On Friday, Ila Cobb led the Stars by going 2 for 2 with the only RBI. Serena Prior had eight strikeouts on the mound.
“She pitched well, there are just certain games where they’re going to hit the ball,” said SoHi coach Kelli Knoebel, whose team is now 5-5.
Saturday, Prior had six strikeouts to notch the win.
SoHi trailed 4-3 entering the bottom of the sixth, but pushed five across the plate.
“It was great to see the kids rally around each other,” Knoebel said. “It was a test of their character. I’m honored to be their coach.”
Amber McDonald was 2 for 4 for SoHi, while Prior was 3 for 4 with four RBIs and Kenley Kingrey was 2 for 3 with two RBIs.
Skyview takes two from Eagle River
The Skyview softball team swept Eagle River on Saturday in Homer.
The Panthers won 12-5 in six innings and 12-4 in five innings to improve to 4-6 overall.
Sam Reynolds pitched both contests to pick up a pair of wins. In the first game, she struck out seven, walked one and gave up three hits. In the second game, she struck out six, walked two and gave up three hits.
“She pitched much better than she did against Homer or against Kodiak,” Skyview coach Steve Schoessler said. “She was a lot more solid.”
In the first game, freshman Renee Hinz, just called up to varsity, was 3 for 4 with a run. Cat Schoessler was 2 for 4 while Victoria Oberts, Mykaela Rybak and Meghan Ussing had hits.
“We kind of started off slow,” Schoessler said. “We brought it together in the fourth inning and scored four runs. The defense stepped up and started making some plays.”
In the second game, Reynolds was 3 for 3 with three runs, Hesse Lynn was 2 for 3 with three runs and two RBIs, Oberts was 3 for 3 with a run, and Schoessler and Marina Rodriguez had hits. Freshman Alicia McLelland also had a run in her first game.
“We kind of carried on with the solid play we had at the end of the first game,” Schoessler said.
Wasilla 21, Kenai 0
The Kardinals committed an “atrocious amount of errors,” according to Kenai coach Mark King, Friday against the Warriors in four innings of action.
“It was error after error for the entire game,” King said.
King said he stopped counting after 10 mistakes.
Alyson Quartly pitched the entire game for Kenai. Shannon Evans hit 1 for 2 to lead the Kards.
Colony 16, Kenai 0
Saturday against Colony, the Kards struggled through a hitless game that went three innings.
King said Colony pulled its starting pitcher after the first two innings, so a perfect game was not recorded.
“But she is hands-down the best pitcher we’ve seen this year,” King said. “
Cierra King got her varsity start pitching for Kenai, striking out four and “pitching a lot of strikes.”
King said his squad committed no more than seven errors Saturday, an improvement over the day before.
“The potential is there, we have the right girls,” he said. “But it’s just the mental part of it that we’re struggling with.”
Kenai will face off with Skyview on Monday.
Homer sweeps Eagle River
The Homer softball team got the weekend off to a good start with a pair of blowout wins over visiting Eagle River, Friday evening in Homer.
The Mariners routed the Wolves 16-2 in four innings in the opening game, before shutting them out 12-0 in four innings again in the second game. The wins improve Homer’s record to 5-13 overall.
In the first game, Eagle River committed five errors to Homer’s two.
Eagle River took a two-run lead right away in the first inning, but Homer answered with four runs in the bottom of the inning, including the go-ahead runs on a single from Lauren Kuhns.
In the second inning, Homer scored eight runs, and added four more in the third.
Riley Walls led the Mariners by hitting 3 for 4 with two RBI and two runs, while Kuhns and McKi Needham each had two hits. Kuhns also batted in four runs, and Maggie LaRue had three RBIs.
Pam Jantzi went the distance on the mound with four hits, five strikeouts and no earned runs.
In the second game, Homer scorched the Wolves in the first inning with nine runs. Overall, Eagle River had only two hits and committed three errors. Homer went error-free.
LaRue hit 2 for 2 with four RBI, Walls went 2 for 2, and Brenna Evarts hit 2 for 3 with three RBI and two runs.
On the mound, Jordan Raymond went three innings with two hits and eight strikeouts, then Needham pitched came out for one perfect inning and struck out all three batters she faced.
