Thursday: Twins get sweep of Ketchikan

The American Legion Post 20 Twins swept the Post 3 Ketchikan Salmon Kings on Thursday in league play at Bartlett High School in Anchorage.

The Twins won 5-3 and 9-3 to move to 10-4 in the league and 17-9 overall. That puts Post 20 in a tie for third place with Chugiak. Ketchikan falls to 5-6 and 8-12.

The Twins finish up the regular season by staying in Anchorage for a pair of games Friday. Post 20 plays Bartlett at 12:30 p.m. and the Alaska Wild at 4 p.m.

In the first game against the Salmon Kings, Post 20 did all its damage with five runs in the fourth inning and that was enough.

Malakai Olson went 5 1-3 innings for the Twins, giving up three runs on three hits while walking six and striking out eight.

Hunter Williams finished up with 1 2-3 scoreless innings, giving up a hit and a walk while striking out two.

Post 20 was opportunistic on offense, getting five hits, five walks and scoring three unearned runs. Matthew Schilling had a double and two RBIs for the Twins, while Trenton Ohnemus, Gabe Smith, Williams and Gabe Joanis added hits. The hits for Smith and Williams were doubles.

In the 9-3 victory over the Salmon Kings, Post 20 led 2-0 after one, but Ketchikan cut it to 2-1 after two. The Twins scored four runs in the fourth, but Ketchikan cut it to 6-3 in the top of the sixth. Post 20 got insurance by scoring three in the bottom of the sixth.

Ohnemus got the win, going six innings and giving up three runs — two earned — on three hits. Ohnemus walked four and struck out 11.

Schilling came on for the seventh, pitching a scoreless and hitless inning while whiffing one.

The Twins cranked out 14 hits in the game. Williams led by going 3 for 4 with three runs, two doubles and two RBIs.

Also, Jayden Stuyvesant was 2 for 2 with a double, Jacob Joanis was 2 for 4 with three RBIs, Ari Miller was 2 for 4 and Olson was 2 for 4. Schilling scored a pair of runs.
