Kenai Central graduate Jonah Theisen qualified Thursday to defend his 3,000-meter steeplechase national title at the NCAA Division II Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Brandenton, Florida.

The final will be at 3:30 p.m. ADT today and will be streamed on NCAA.com.

The Black Hills State sophomore ran in the first qualifying heat of the day and finished seventh with a time of 9 minutes, 1.30 seconds. Theisen then had to sweat out the second race, because the top four finishers in each heat qualify, then the next fastest four qualify on time.
