The Soldotna High School girls and boys track and field teams swept the Kenai Peninsula Borough meet Saturday at Ed Hollier Field at Kenai Central High School.
Homer Middle School won the boys title, while Skyview Middle School won the girls title.
The SoHi boys won with 267 points, while runner-up Homer had 142. Seward was third, Kenai Central was fourth, Nikiski was fifth and Ninilchik was sixth.
The Soldotna girls won with 225, while runner-up Homer had 189. Seward was third, Kenai Central was fourth, Nikiski was fifth and Ninilchik was sixth.
The highlight for the Stars was breaking three school records on the day.
The boys 400-meter relay of Lokeni Wong, Tyce Escott, James Innes and Brenden Jones ran 43.46 seconds to break a school record they had set earlier this season. The group has the top time in the state.
Before this season, the record had belonged to the 1995 crew of Josh Coleman, Jesse Calder, Drew Coleman and Joel Knight.
The girls 400-meter relay of Anaulie Sedivy, Sophia Jedlicki, Shiloh Zichko and Sarah Brown ran 50.70 to break a school record and set the top time in the state.
The previous record was set in 2000 by Lissa Cristiano, Sarah Histand, Annette Rhoades and Janna Schaafsma.
Wyatt Faircloth ran 15.33 in the 110 hurdles to give the Stars a third school record on the day. The previous record was set by Darren Kallum in 1994. The record was hand timed at 15.1, which converts to 15.34 in fully automatic timing.
“This isn’t really school record weather,” SoHi head coach Phil Leck said. “I’m really kind of impressed to see that today.
“We had the horses to do it. I just really wasn’t expecting it today.”
Leck said due to the history of track and field at Soldotna, school records are tough to break. The late Mark Devenney retired in 2005 after 14 years and three state track titles in which SoHi went against all of the biggest schools in the state.
A week earlier, the girls 1,600-meter relay of Jedlicki, Annie Burns, Sasha Brott and Zichko had run 4:06.23 at the Anchorage Invite for a new school record.
The previous record was set in 2014 by Dani McCormick, Lindsey Wong, Olivia Hutchings and Daisy Nelson.
“I’m getting spoiled. It’s happened a lot this year,” Leck said of school records. “I’ve got to put it in perspective.
“There’s a lot of history in this school in track and field, especially back in the Devenney days, so to watch these records go away over time is impressive. It’s impressive what some of these kids are doing.”
The Soldotna boys won 13 of 17 events. Faircloth won three individual events — the 110 hurdles, the 300 hurdles and the long jump.
Escott won the 100 and 200, while Luke Miller won the shot put and discus. Innes won the 400, while Ethan Anding had a PR of 2:03.89 to win the 800.
SoHi swept the relays, with Anding, Jones, Faircloth and Innes winning the 800 relay, Anding, Paxton Roach, Jones and Innes winning the 1,600 relay, and Michael Davidson, Jayden Yeager, Ollie Dahl and Parker Richards winning the 3,200 relay.
Leck said another highlight for the boys was the dominance in the throws. The Stars took the top 10 spots in both the shot put and discus.
The Soldotna girls had to overcome a fight from Homer — both squads won 8 of the 17 events.
SoHi got a pair of individual wins from Jedlicki and Burns. Jedlicki had PRs to win the 200 in 26.74 and the 400 in 59.11.
Burns won the 800 and 1,600. While Burns ran a 2:26.25 in the 800 on Saturday, she had a PR of 2:20.88 at the Anchorage Invite last week to move up to fifth in school history and break the meet record.
“She’s just peaking,” Leck said. “She’s ready to roll. She’s one of our bullets. She’s a team leader. She’s our captain.”
Also for Soldotna, Sedivy won the 300 hurdles and Grayson Henry had a PR of 32 feet, 7.25 inches, to take the triple jump.
The 1,600 relay of Zichko, Burns, Sedivy and Jedlicki gave SoHi its final victory.
Leck said other highlights were Lucy Uhlir getting a PR in the 100 and 200, and Sarah Brown getting a PR in the 200 and long jump. Kathryn DeBardelaben was with the softball team in Kodiak, but jumped in the Kodiak Invitational on Friday and ran a 5:21.15 in the 1,600 to put her sixth in Division I state.
Homer assistant coach Lucas Parsley said the Mariners were holding back a bit Saturday partly because Homer had prom Saturday night, and partly to get ready for regions.
“At least on the distance side, we were eliminating kids from events, just looking out for keeping them healthy,” he said. “We were choosing a few events that we really wanted them to refine and work on for regions.”
Gracie Miotke won the 100 with a PR of 12.96 and took the 100 hurdles, but did not run her signature 300 hurdles.
Dayten Van Ostrand won the shot put and discus.
“She’s a freshman, and this whole year she’s been incredibly coachable and hard-working,” Parsley said.
As the Mariners chase region and state titles, Parsley said the jumpers will be important. Saturday, Jaelynn Kennon won the high jump and Reilly Sue Baker won the long jump.
The final victories came from Liliana Harris, Isabella Clarke, Vera Bates and Molly Evans in the 800 relay, and Beatrix McDonough, Claira Booz, Myra Kalafut and Etta Bynagle in the 3,200 relay.
“They’re about 6 seconds off breaking the school record right now, and they just hit a PR by about 20 seconds today,” Parsley said of the 3,200 relay.
The lone victory for the boys came from Johannes Bynagle in the 800, who led a Homer sweep of the top three in the event. Parsley said Bynagle had a light load as he recovers from illness.
The coach said another highlight for the boys was Emelian Melkomukov hitting a PR of 18—1 to take second in the long jump, and Hunter Gauthier also hitting a PR in the long jump.
Kenai Central head coach Jesse Settlemyer, who also is the athletic director, said the biggest highlight for him was how all the volunteers and officials came together to put on the massive meet that rolls a high school and middle school meet into one.
“It’s kind of nuts to put this on,” he said. “A big thank you to all of the volunteers and everybody who helped out today.”
Settlemyer said Clayton Holland, Kenai Peninsula Borough School District superintendent, volunteered to give out awards. Dan Beck, Kenai Central principal, and Vaughn Dosko, Kenai Middle School principal, also were there for the duration.
Ken Felchle, Kenai Middle School assistant principal, served as starter for the meet and got there with Settlemyer at 7:30 a.m. to help set up.
Gage Ivy had Kenai’s lone win at the meet, taking the triple jump.
Settlemyer said another highlight was the performance of hurdlers Delen Byrd and Matthew Krol. Byrd had PRs in the 110 hurdles (16.96) and the 300 hurdles, and now has the top Division II hurdles time in the state. Krol had a PR in the 300 hurdles.
“They really push each other,” Settlemyer said. “They’re leaders on the team at track meets and practice in terms of setting the tempo and energy.”
Byrd and Krol were seniors honored at the meet along with Grady Adams, Jason Johnson, Mya Taylor, Ben Roberts, Silvan Krieg, Oliver Boorsma, Elliot Hanson and Tyler Van Sky.
“They’re just a great group,” Settlemyer said. “We’re going to miss them.
“I know they’re going to do good things because they’re just great people and great students.”
Seward did not have a home meet this season, so seniors Ronan Bickling, Marty Fink, Oliver Trobaugh, Van Shank, Katie Van Buskirk and Gracie Russell were honored at the meet.
“I just appreciate their leadership this year,” Seward head coach Ryan Bringhurst said. “They’ve been a big part of our team, helping our freshmen get going and get committed.
“We’re excited about the good things coming in Seward.”
While Seward had some top performances at the meet, Bringhurst was mindful that some team members didn’t qualify for regions, and he said the focus was making sure they had a great final meet.
The Seward boys swept the podium in the high jump, with Olin Liljemark taking first at 6—0 and Luke Elhard taking second at 6—0. That height is the top mark in Division II. Van Shank was third at 5—6.
Bringhurst said the three are friends and push each other at practice. Even so, Elhard’s leap was a surprise, increasing his PR by 4 inches.
“That’s was totally out of the blue,” Bringhurst said. “He did really good. He was feeling it today.”
Seward also swept the 3,200-meter runs, with Sampson Antrim hitting a PR of 10:57.07 and Indigo Leslie taking the girls race in 12:14.03, with Van Buskirk right behind at 12:14.30 for a PR.
Bringhurst said another highlight was Russell hitting a PR of 82—9 to take third in the discus.
For Nikiski, the girls scored in a pair of relays.
McKenzie Flanders, Raycee Daniels, Jayden Anderson and Milly Hornung were third in the 800 relay and fifth in the 400 relay.
For the boys, Ethan Ellis was fourth in the high jump and fifth in the triple jump, while Ryder Maguire was sixth in the 400 and sixth in the 1,600.
The Ninilchik boys got a fifth in the 400 relay from John Jackson, Linc Witten, Judeaya Mobley and Logan Wade.
