Saturday: Seward girls, Ninilchik boys win Homer Winter Carnival; CIA boys win NIT

The Seward girls and Ninilchik boys basketball teams won the Homer Winter Carnival on Saturday.

The Seward girls finished a perfect run through the tournament by topping Homer 54-22. Seward is 13-2 and has won 13 straight, while Homer is 3-13.

Mikinley Williams had 16 points for Seward, while Lia Shank had 13, Grace Fleming had 8, Ava Jagielski had 7, Natalie Sieminski had 6 and Regan Siebert had 4.

For the Mariners, Channing Lowney had 16, while Abby Ostrom, Keagan Niebuhr and Madalyn Miotke all had 2.

The Ninilchik boys finished off the title by topping Bethel 74-67 to move to 2-1 in the tourney and 11-7 overall.

Kade McCorison poured in 36 for Ninilchik, while Andon McCorison had 18, Onyx Allen had 10 and Maxx Russell had 8.

For Bethel, Ethan Wheeler had 20, Madden Cockroft had 15, Mason Berlin had 13, Jackson Iverson had 8 and Kenneth Fox had 5.

The Seward boys defeated Homer 51-48. The Seahawks got their lone win of the tourney and move to 7-8 overall. Homer also was 1-2 at the tourney and falls to 4-10 overall.

Spencer Dye paced the Mariners with 15, while Henry Wedvik had 10, Einar Pederson had 9, Ben Engebretsen had 8, Preston Stanislaw had 4 and Graham Plumlee had 2.

For the Seahawks, Mason Elhard had 16, Talon Lemme had 14, Emerson Cross had 9, Jack Lindquist had 6, Lane Pedersen had 3 and Van Shank had 2.

Also Saturday, the Bethel girls defeated Kodiak 50-14.

Bethel’s Briella Herron was MVP of the girls tournament, while Jagielski, Shank, Lowney, Malinda Simon of Bethel and Mizzy Arbues of Kodiak also made all-tournament.

Kade McCorison was the boys MVP, while Cross, Lemme, Pederson, Cockroft and Wheeler also made all-tournament.

Nenana Invitational Tournament

The Cook Inlet Academy boys defeated Susitna Valley 81-64 in the tournament championship.

CIA head coach Ben McGarry, whose team improved to 15-4 overall, wrote in a text message that his team took control midway through the second quarter.

“It was a solid all around effort by the team,” McGarry wrote.

Ian McGarry was named MVP of the tourney, while Alek McGarry also made the all-tournament team. For the CIA girls, Ella Rollman was all-tournament.

Ian McGarry had 35 in the title game, while Alek McGarry had 22, Brandt Rollman had 9, Lucas Oyoumick had 8, Matthew Phillips had 4 and Owen Braband had 3.

The CIA girls took sixth at the tourney.

For Su Valley, Austin Barnard had 22, Miles Osmond had 20, Colton Thompson had 11, Owen Drum had 5, Earl Davidson had 4 and Douglas Drover had 2.
