Prep basketball season opens with big night of tourneys

The Kenai Central girls basketball team opened their season with a 60-22 victory over Redington on Thursday at the Craig Jung Tournament at Kenai Central.

Emilee Wilson pumped in 20 points to lead the Kardinals, while Ellsi Miller had 12, Alex Nelson had 7, Sierra Hershberger and Grace Kahn had 4, Mckenzie Spence had 3, and Gracee Every, Savannah Hershberger, Mycka Phillips and Avia Miller had 2.

The Redington boys topped Kenai 52-36.

Ryker Dykema paced the Kards with 11 points, while Miles Metteer had 9, Reid Titus had 6, William Wilson had 4, and Trae Pitsch and Ben Harris each had 3.

The Mt. Edgecumbe boys notched a 79-36 victory over Soldotna.

Andrew Pieh had 14 points to lead the Stars, while Izaiah Gilbert had 10, Zac Buckbee had 6, and Cam Laroque, Jace O’Reagan and Theo Huff had 2.

The Mt. Edgecumbe girls defeated Soldotna 75-43.

Bessie Williams had 25 for the Braves, while Carliese O’Brien had 11, Tessa Anderson had 10, Brooke Markoff had 9, Tahira Akaran had 5, Camille Johnson had 3 and Cheyenne Steeves had 2.

Morgan Lemm pumped in 21 for the Stars, while Hope Hillyer had 10, Isabelle Cruz had 4, Brooke Walters, Juliet Innes and Sarah Brown had 2, and Anaulie Sedivy and Grayson Henry had 1.

Friday at the tournament, the Redington girls play Soldotna at 3 p.m., the Redington boys play Soldotna at 4:30 p.m., the Kenai girls play Mt. Edgecumbe at 6 p.m. and the Kenai boys play Mt. Edgecumbe at 7:30 p.m.

Saturday, the Mt. Edgecumbe girls play Redington at 11:30 a.m., the Mt. Edgecumbe boys play Redington at 1 p.m., the Kenai girls play Soldotna at 2:30 p.m. and the Kenai boys play Soldotna at 4 p.m.

Cook Inlet Classic

The Cook Inlet Academy boys opened up play at the round-robin tournament by toppling Soldotna JV 77-41.

Ian McGarry had 36, Alek McGarry had 21, Jonas Oyoumick had 8, Brandt Rollman had 5, Owen Braband had 4, Trent Waller had 3 and Jeremy Dillingham had 2.

For Soldotna JV, Josh Babcock had 11, Carter Hillyer had 10, Brody Linton had 7, Dax Walden had 6, Jayden Stuyvesant had 3, and Sam Strouse and Liam Peck had 2.

The Soldotna JV girls topped CIA 47-26.

For the Stars, Diane Blanning had 18, Campbell Kincaid had 10, Teagan Kobylarz had 7, Jillian Duncan and Rebekah Pieh had 6, Abigail Semaken and Ryan Queen had 2, and Maddison Riley-Teets had 1.

For the Eagles girls, Ella Rollman had 17, Maria Smith had 5, Rebekah Dillingham had 3 and Gabrielle Viefeld had 1.

The Susitna Valley girls topped Kenai’s junior varsity 41-22.

For the Su-Valley girls, Lily Esmailka led the way with 21 points, while Poppy Moren and Cori Gossett had six, Ashley Elima had 5 and Qmia Taala had 1.

For the Kenai girls, Mckenzie Spence had 10, Evelyn Cooper and Allie Hutchins had 5, and Jeica Anderson had 2.

The Susitna Valley boys topped the Kenai JV 48-37.

For the Rams boys, Austin Barnard had 22, Miles Osmond had 13, Earl Dividson and Landon Ballard had 5, Austin Pevan had 2 and Henry Davidson had 1.

For the Kards, Miles Metteer had 12, Trae Pitsch had 7, Reid Titus had 6, Riel Castillo had 5, Garrett McCanna had 3, and Zach Armstrong and Gage Ivy had 2.

Friday at the tourney, the Su-Valley girls play SoHi JV at 2 p.m., the Su-Valley boys play SoHi JV at 3:45 p.m., the Kenai JV girls play CIA at 5:30 p.m. and the Kenai JV boys play CIA at 7:15 p.m.

Saturday, the SoHi JV girls play Kenai at 11 a.m., the SoHi JV boys play Kenai at 12:45 p.m., the Su-Valley girls play CIA at 2:30 p.m., and the Su-Valley boys play CIA at 4:15 p.m.

25th Annual Grace Grizzly Classic

On the opening day of the classic at Grace Christian School in Anchorage, the Monroe Catholic boys defeated Homer 67-49 and the Barrow girls defeated Homer 62-33.

Kiara Burnell had 12 to lead the Whalers. For Homer, Sydney Shelby had 13 while Channing Lowney and Keagan Niebuhr had six apiece, Minadora Reutov had four, Juliann Techie had 2 and Lillie May Kuhn and Mally Im each had 1.

Friday at the classic, which is a round robin, the Homer girls play Grace at 6:30 p.m. and the Homer boys play Grace at 8:15 p.m.

Saturday, the Homer girls play Kotzebue at 10 a.m. and the Homer boys play Kotzebue at 11:45 a.m.

Lady Archangel Tip-Off Tournament

In the first round of the bracket tournament at Lumen Christian in Anchorage, the Nikiski girls beat Lumen Christi 40-26 and South girls topped Seward 34-32.

For Nikiski, Shelby Burman had 14, Maggie Grenier had 10, Alexa Iyatunguk had six, Kailey Stynsberg had six, Brooke Abel had three and Avery Ellis had one.

For the Lumen girls, Amara Warren had 16, Lily Muller had 5, Hayden Estabrook had 3 and Isabel Brown had 2.

For Seward, Ava Jagielski had 9, Mikinley Williams had 8, Robin Cronin had 6, Addison Lemme and Stella Dow had 3, Kyana Hutchinson had 2 and Lia Shank had 1.

For South, Skylar Morris had 11, Isa Costa deSilva had 9, Karolina Rzezut had 6, Niveah Heartwell had 4 and Ellie Birch had 2.

Friday at the tourney, Seward plays Lumen Christi at 3 p.m. in the fourth-place semifinals and Nikiski plays South in the semifinals at 7 p.m.

Ninilchik boys 76, North Douglas 63

The host Wolverines notched a nonconference victory over North Douglas of Oregon on Thursday.

Kade McCorison poured in 44 points for the Wolverines, while Rowan Mahoney had 20. Also for Ninilchik, Max Russell had 6, and Kannon Hughes, Carter Lemons and Tanner Berger each added 2.

For North Douglas, Hunter Vaugn had 30 while Jayden Montgomery had 16, Caden Reigard had 7, Tucker Kallinger had 4, and Levi McHaffie and Wyatt Reed each had 3.

Today at Ninilchik, the Seward boys take on North Douglas at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Ninilchik hosts Seward at 3 p.m.
