Hoops roundup: Kenai boys stay unbeaten

The host Kenai Central boys basketball team defeated Homer 54-48 on Thursday in a matchup of two previously undefeated teams.

The Kardinals, at 4-0, have now beaten each of the other major peninsula schools. Homer falls to 2-1.

Kenai led 17-11 after a quarter and 26-19 at halftime. After leading 34-24 after three quarters, things really got going in the fourth quarter. Homer reeled off 24 points, but the Kardinals were able to score 20 to preserve the victory.

Maison Dunham had 15 points to lead Kenai, while Jordan Kvasnikoff had 14 and Jacob Kvasnikoff added 12.

For Homer, Clayton Beachy had 16, Parker Lowney had 13, Josiah Raymond had 11 and Eyoab Knapp had eight.

Homer girls 43, Kenai 20

The visiting Mariners picked up their first victory of the year by taking advantage of Kenai turnovers.

Homer is now 1-2, while the Kardinals fall to 2-2.

The Kardinals led 8-6 after the first quarter, but then Homer took control, leading 18-8 at halftime and 28-12 after three quarters.

Laura Inama paced Homer with 13 points, while Hannah Hatfield had 10 and Delilah Harris added nine.

For the Kardinals, Logan Satathite led the way with eight points. Kenai coach Jeff Swick also gave credit to freshman Emilee Wilson for coming in and sparking the defense in the second half.

Nikiski girls 46, Seward 33

The visiting Bulldogs moved to 2-1 with a victory over the Seahawks. Seward falls to 0-3.

The game was tied at 22 at the half, but Nikiski took control in the second half.

Lillian Carstens paced Nikiski with 20 points, including 13 in the second half. Kinlee Jeffreys added eight.

For Seward, Katelyn Lemme had 10 points.

Seward boys 59, Nikiski 51

The host Seahawks moved to 2-1 by holding off the Bulldogs, who fell to 0-3.

Seward led 19-13 after a quarter and 32-24 at halftime. The Bulldogs cut the gap to three points after three quarters, but Seward won the fourth 20-15.

Sam Koster paced the Seahawks with 16 points, while Tommy Cronin had 14, Max Pfeiffenberger had 12 and Levi Deboard had eight.

For Nikiski, Drew Handley had 13, Austin Stafford had 12 and Caileb Payne had nine.

Kenai C girls 31, CIA 22

The visiting Eagles opened up their season with a loss on Wednesday.

Cook Inlet Academy got off to a slow start, falling behind 6-0 after a period and 14-2 at halftime. The Eagles won the second half 20-17.

Emma Beck paced the Kardinals C with 12 points, while Shania McCanna had eight.

For CIA, Riley Tucker led the way with 10 points.
