Homer softball routs Eagle River

The Homer softball team got the weekend off to a good start with a pair of blowout wins over visiting Eagle River, Friday evening in Homer.

The Mariners routed the Wolves 16-2 in four innings in the opening game, before shutting them out 12-0 in four innings again in the second game. The wins improve Homer’s record to 5-13 overall.
In the first game, Eagle River committed five errors to Homer’s two.

Eagle River took a 2-run lead right away in the first inning, but Homer answered with four runs in the bottom of the inning, including the go-ahead runs on a single from Lauren Kuhns.

In the second inning, Homer scored eight runs, and added four more in the third.

Riley Walls led the Mariners by hitting 3 for 4 with two RBI and two runs, while Kuhns and McKi Needham each had two hits. Kuhns also batted in four runs, and Maggie LaRue had three RBI.

Pam Jantzi went the distance on the mound with four hits, five strikeouts and no earned runs.

In the second game, Homer scorched the Wolves in the first inning with nine runs. Overall, Eagle River had only two hits and committed three errors. Homer went error-free.

LaRue hit 2 for 2 with four RBI, Walls went 2 for 2, and Brenna Evarts hit 2 for 3 with three RBI and two runs.

On the mound, Jordan Raymond went three innings with two hits and eight strikeouts, then Needham pitched came out for one perfect inning and struck out all three batters she faced.
