CIA’s Ian McGarry gets 1A boys Player of Year

Cook Inlet Academy sophomore Ian McGarry was named the Class 1A boys Player of the Year in voting announced Tuesday by the Alaska Association of Basketball Coaches.

McGarry led the Eagles to a 23-4 overall record and the Class 1A Peninsula Conference regular season and tournament titles. CIA then lost in the second round of the Class 1A state tournament 65-63 to Tri-Valley on a last-second shot.

Seniors Jaylin Scott and Cole Moore of Ninilchik were named to the Class 2A boys first team. Scott and Moore led the Wolverines to their second straight state title and second straight Interior Conference regular season and tournament title. Ninilchik finished 24-5 overall and was undefeated against Class 2A and Kenai Peninsula competition.

Kenai Central junior Emma Beck earned another first-team nod for the peninsula. Beck earned the honor for the Class 3A girls. The Kardinals finished second in the Class 3A Peninsula Conference, then went 2-1 at Class 3A state to take fourth place. Kenai finished 18-13 overall.

The Kardinals’ Jakob Kvasnikoff, a senior, earned second team honors for Class 3A boys. Kvasnikoff led the Kardinals to second place in the Class 3A Peninsula Conference in the regular season and the conference tournament. At the Class 3A state tournament, Kenai finished 1-2, losing the fourth-sixth place game to Valdez. Kenai was 16-14 overall.

Seward senior Lena Jagielski made the second team for Class 3A girls. Jagielski led the Seahawks to second place in the regular season in the Class 3A Peninsula Conference. Seward lost the second-place game at the conference tournament to Kenai, failing to qualify for state. Seward was 16-10 overall.

CIA senior Tatum Rozak also picked up a second-team nod for the peninsula. Rozak led the Eagles to second place in the Class 1A Peninsula Conference in the regular season and conference tournament. CIA finished 2-2 at Class 1A state to take fifth place and finish 18-8 overall.
