CIA, Birchwood girls, boys to meet in Peninsula Conference semifinal

Cook Inlet Academy and Birchwood Christian are in the semifinal in both the girls and boys brackets after Thursday at the Peninsula Conference tournament at Cook Inlet Academy.

The CIA girls are the top seed and received a bye to the semifinals against No. 2 Birchwood, which defeated No. 3 Nanwalek 36-24 on Thursday.

The girls semifinal is set for 3 p.m. Friday.

The No. 1 CIA boys defeated Holy Rosary Academy 79-27, and No. 3 Birchwood topped No. 2 Nanwalek 75-69 in overtime.

CIA and Birchwood play in the boys semifinal at 4:30 p.m.

Also Friday, the Nanwalek girls play the semifinal loser at 6 p.m. for a spot in the championship against the semifinal winner.

The championship is at 11 a.m. Saturday, with the if-necessary game at 3 p.m. The champion gets a Class 1A state berth.

Friday in the boys tourney, Holy Rosary and Nanwalek play at 1:30 p.m. The winner plays the semifinal loser at 7:30 p.m.

The winner of that game plays the semifinal winner at 1:30 p.m. Saturday for the title, with the if-necessary game at 4:30 p.m. The champion gets a Class 1A state berth.

Birchwood Christian girls 36, Nanwalek 24

Birchwood was able to make its way to the semifinal.

For Nanwalek, Phontina Demas had 8, Ludmilla Hetrick had 6, Hadassah Haskins had 4, Alyson Seville, Emma Tanape and Margareta Demas had 2, and Harleigh Romanoff had 1.

Birchwood Christian boys 75, Nanwalek 69, OT

Birchwood was able to pull off the upset.

For Nanwalek, Marcarious Evans had 20, Kenji Simmons had 16, Sean Moonin and Ashton Meganack had 14, and Kayonte Simmons, Dmitri Kvasnikoff and Chase Kvasnikoff had 2.

CIA boys 79, Holy Rosary 27

The Eagles rolled into the semifinal.

For CIA, Brandt Rollman had 21, Alek McGarry had 17, Ian McGarry had 11, Lucas Oyoumick had 8, Hyrum Henderson had 5, Matthew Phillips and Zach Armstrong had 4, John Guerra had 3, Jonas Oyoumick and Silas Barnes had 2, and Blaine Hunt and Owen Braband had 1.

For Holy Rosary, Eric Helzer had 8, Luke Owens had 6, Christopher Hodel and Francis Bird had 4, Braiden Stubbs had 3 and Teddy Jackson had 2.
