Over the past week since the failure of House Bill 69, I and many other legislators have been working with the Senate striving to find a package of education measures that legislators could agree on and that could make it across the finish line.
Last week online and in my newsletter, I stated that “I am done with their games.” Today, I am thankful that, for now at least, political gamesmanship was set aside.
I would like to thank many of my colleagues for their hard work this past week fighting to get to a “yes.” The bill that passed today (HB 57) provides fiscal certainty to our schools, teachers, and support staff, as well as many other policy measures.
During this session, I have talked often about the “YES, AND” approach to finding solutions to key issues. This method of governing is not easy, and consensus is difficult to accomplish, but I believe it is well worth the effort if you want to make a lasting and meaningful difference. I have worked hard this year to build that consensus because our state is at a pivotal crossroads. I believe education is one of the critical linchpins in our state, and it is vitally important to the continued success of our state.
I can tell you with certainty that legislators have held countless conversations back and forth in the past week that has enabled most of us to get to the “YES, AND.” Yes, we have agreed upon a BSA number, AND we have incorporated necessary reform policies.
What you have seen accomplished this week is the result of good governing, which has focused on ensuring strong reforms are incorporated with fiscal solutions.
Now that the House and Senate compromised on an education package it will be sent to the governor for his consideration. As is true with any real compromise, no one gets everything they want or desire. Rather, a compromise is coming to an agreement on 80% of the issues important to most Alaskans. Although this isn’t the end all solution to all thing’s education, it is a good start, and I was happy to be a yes vote.
