Danny Lowry Jr., a 55-year-old Seward resident who was sought for questioning by law enforcement last week after a shooting in Seward that left a woman dead, was detained on Tuesday, Alaska State Troopers said.

A Tuesday update to a dispatch originally published on Sept. 25 says only that “a tip from the public helped Troopers locate Danny Lowry and detain him for questioning.”

KSRM 920 AM reported on Tuesday that Lowry was found and arrested near the intersection of Kalifornsky Beach Road and Murwood Avenue between Kenai and Soldotna at around 2:30 p.m. on Tuesday, nearly a week after troopers said he had fled from their custody in Seward. They cited that information to a message from Captain Mike Zweifel, of the Alaska State Troopers.

Alaska State Troopers on Wednesday declined to respond when asked by the Clarion where Lowry was found and taken into custody.

The original text of the trooper’s dispatch says that troopers responded to a report early in the morning of Sept. 25 that a woman was unconscious “after potentially being shot.”

Troopers detained Lowry and another man while providing emergency care to the woman, 51-year-old Billie Cubley, who died later that day at a hospital in Seward.

Findings of the Alaska Bureau of Investigation did not indicate murder, the dispatch said, but Lowry fled on foot. A search by troopers, police, and two SWAT teams in Seward was “exhaustive,” but “unsuccessful.”

“It is unclear why Lowry fled the scene,” the dispatch read. A warrant had been requested on a charge of fourth-degree escape and the updated dispatch says the charge has “been referred to the District Attorney’s Office. ” No records of criminal charges have been filed in the state’s court database as of Wednesday evening.
