Citing a continued strong run of sockeye salmon on the Kenai River, which wholly exceeded the escapement goal a couple of weeks ago, the State Department of Fish and Game on Wednesday announced it will maintain the increased sockeye bag limit through the end of the year.
The bag limit for sockeye, currently six per day and 12 in possession, was set to decrease to three per day and six in possession on Aug. 16. Because the escapement goal has been exceeded, a release from the department says, “it is warranted to maintain the higher bag and possession limits for sockeye salmon.”
The bag limits were previously increased to six per day and 12 in possession by the Kenai River Late-Run King Salmon Stock of Concern Management Plan, effective from June 20 through Aug. 15.
The increased limits are effective from the mouth of the Kenai River upstream to a regulatory marker at the outlet of Skilak Lake.
“To provide anglers additional opportunity to harvest late-run sockeye salmon with this historic run in the Kenai River, we are maintaining the higher limits in the Kenai River downstream of Skilak Lake,” stated Area Management Biologist Phill Stacey.
