Giving thanks together

Seniors gather for annual Hilcorp Areawide Senior Thanksgiving Luncheon

There were no open seats left Friday at the Kenai Senior Center, as the banquet hall was filled for the Hilcorp Areawide Senior Thanksgiving Luncheon.

Seniors ate meals of turkey, mashed potatoes, stuffing, rolls, cranberry salad and pumpkin pie, plated and delivered to their tables by Hilcorp volunteers, the Kenai Civil Air Patrol cadets and Kenai Peninsula Borough Mayor Peter Micciche.

“We enjoy seeing your faces every year,” Kenai Senior Services Director Kathy Romain said before food was served. “Some of you we don’t see until the Hilcorp Thanksgiving. What a time to get out, to give thanks, to celebrate, to not get stuck in our homes and to be able to enjoy a wonderful Thanksgiving dinner.”

Hilcorp has supported the luncheon for over a decade, Micciche said. The Kenai City Council on Nov. 20 accepted a $5,000 donation from Hilcorp for purchase of food and other supplies at the meal.

Romain told the council at that meeting that they expected to serve meals to at least 230 people.

Sarah Lambert, a community and engagement advisor for Hilcorp, said at the luncheon that she was joined by 20 Hilcorp volunteers — among them was Kenai City Council member Victoria Askin.

“Giving back is a core part of who we are,” she said. “We’re especially proud to be a part of this strong, resilient community. Thank you for allowing us to celebrate with you today.”
