Crash in Turnagain Pass sends 1 to hospital

A car accident in the Turnagain Pass on Sunday afternoon due to slushy road conditions sent a man to the hospital.

Alaska State Troopers responded to a single-vehicle accident around mile 54.2 of the Seward Highway, near the Hope Highway junction, around 1:04 p.m., according to an online dispatch. A Dodge pickup truck carrying Christine Rose, 65, of Soldotna, and one passenger traveling north had struck the guardrail after it “lost traction on the slush covered pavement,” the dispatch states.

“Rose was unable to maintain control of the vehicle as it crossed the center line and struck the southbound side guardrail,” the dispatch states.

Both were wearing seatbelts and Rose was unhurt, but her passenger had non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to the hospital, according to the dispatch.

Warming weather and freezing rain made the roads on the Kenai Peninsula dicey on Sunday. The roads on the western Kenai Peninsula were largely clear and rated as good driving conditions Monday morning, according to Alaska 511, but the roads on the eastern Kenai Peninsula were still icy and wet.

The warm weather is forecast to continue through Monday with more rain and wind gusts on the western Kenai Peninsula up to 55 miles per hour, dying down by Tuesday.
