A fatal vehicle crash occurred early Tuesday morning near Mile 161 of the Sterling Highway, leaving one dead.
Alaska State Troopers were notified at 7:46 a.m. of a vehicle upside down in the Anchor River, according to a dispatch released later that afternoon. They “immediately” responded to the scene and found the driver, whose identity has not yet been released, dead inside the vehicle.
According to the dispatch, a preliminary investigation determined that the vehicle was traveling north on the highway when it went off the road, struck a guardrail and “eventually” rolled into the river around 1:15 a.m.
The highway was intermittently closed on Tuesday for approximately two hours as troopers and recovery crews investigated the collision and recovered the vehicle, the dispatch states. The driver’s body was sent to the State Medical Examiner’s Office; their identity will be released once they are positively identified and next of kin have been notified.
