Kenai Art Center show transforms threads to art

Quilts, hats, sculptures and even art that resembles paintings crafted entirely of different natural and synthetic fibers are in the spotlight this month for “Fiber,” an open call show at the Kenai Art Center that debuts with a reception Friday night at 5 p.m.

At the center on Wednesday, more than 50 works by a couple dozen local artists could be seen filling the center walls or displayed in the main gallery space.

Featured are Diane Peterson, Carolyn Jennings, Vickie Roney, Jan Wallace, Niko Xlotnik, Chelline Larsen, Tracey Bunts and many others.

Though all the works share the fiber theming of the show, they take many forms and are crafted of various materials. Wool, yarn, fabric, thread and more are represented in diverse pieces of art.

The opening reception on Friday, Feb. 7, runs from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. with refreshments and live music by Maria Allison.

The art center is already taking submissions for their next show, a juried exhibition titled “Infusion” that will coincide with the center’s annual beer launch fundraiser. Art can be submitted during gallery hours through Feb. 28. The show will open with an opening reception on March 7.

In addition to “Infusion,” the center’s back gallery will also display a two-woman show next month by Morgan Chamberlain and Daisy Jeffords — titled “Secret Garden.” It’ll also open on March 7.

“Fiber” will be open during gallery hours, noon to 5 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday until Feb. 22.

For more information about all shows, to submit art or apply for an exhibition, visit kenaiartcenter.org or find “Kenai Art Center” on Facebook.
