The Homer Mariners enjoyed a successful weekend of wrestling in Kodiak, dominating a dual over the Bears on Friday and scoring a team victory in the Robin Hervey tournament Saturday.

Friday evening, the Mariners scored a 68-0 dual win over Kodiak, then won the Hervey tournament with 194 points, besting the Bears haul of 102 points. Seward took third place with 54.5 points.

Among the weekend highlights, Mose Hayes won the 132-pound crown Friday with an 8-4 decision over Kodiak’s Russel Dela Cruz, then beat Dela Cruz again Saturday with a 7-6 decision at 138 pounds.

Also, Jared Brant bumped up a weight class and defeated two successful Kodiak wrestlers in Eli Kniaziowski and Josh Nummer. On Friday, Brant pinned Kniaziowski in the second period, then defeated Nummer on Saturday with a 9-7 decision.

At 106 pounds, Homer’s Wayne Newman won both days with a pin and a 5-0 decision over Bryan Gonzalez of Kodiak.

Also picking up double victories for Homer over the two days were Seth Inama, Luciano Fasulo, Chris Cudaback, Timmy Woo, Tristen Cook, Levi King, Kyle Wells and Jadin Mann.

 

SoHi, Kenai take on Valley at North/South tourney

The Soldotna Stars finished fourth with 75 points in the team standings at the annual North/South Invitational Saturday at Wasilla High School, while Kenai Central was fifth with 47.5 points.

The Stars picked up several wins along the way. Gideon Hutchison won the 113-pound crown with a 9-7 sudden death decision, Austin Schrader won the 170-pound match with an 8-5 decision, and Austin Reeves won the 285-pound bout with a 5-2 decision.

Kenai’s lone winner was Keyshawn McEnerney with a 9-3 decision at 152 pounds. Teammate Byron Dunham also made the finals, losing by pin in the 182-pound final.
