Wednesday: Oilers split doubleheader with Chinooks

The Peninsula Oilers and Chugiak-Eagle River Chinooks split an Alaska Baseball League doubleheader on Wednesday at Lee Jordan Field in Chugiak.

The Oilers won the first game 6-2 before dropping the nightcap 1-0.

The Anchorage Bucs continue to lead the league at 13-5, while the Oilers are 10-8, the Mat-Su Miners are 9-9, the Anchorage Glacier Pilots are 8-14 and the Chinooks are 7-11.

This was the third and fourth games in a nine-game, eight-day road trip for the Oilers. The trip continues when Peninsula travels to Hermon Brothers Field in Palmer to face the Miners at 4 p.m. Thursday.

In the first game, Oilers starter Emerson Fleck was able to work around six hits in five innings in allowing two runs. He walked one and struck out four.

Colby Reynolds then pitched two scoreless innings to nail down the victory, allowing two hits.

The Oilers grabbed a 3-0 lead in the top of the third on three unearned runs. The Chinooks battled back with two runs in the fourth, but Peninsula came right back with three runs in the top of the fifth.

The top of the order was productive for the Oilers. Cole Dawson was 2 for 3 with two runs and an RBI out of the No. 2 spot, Ty Thomas was 2 for 4 with two runs and an RBI in the No. 4 spot, and Max Roffwarg was 3 for 4 with a run and an RBI out of the No. 5 spot.

Also, Cody New had a pair of RBIs.

Brayden Adams worked five innings for the Chinooks, giving up six runs — three earned — on nine hits while walking three and striking out three. Peyton Niemann pitched two scoreless innings, giving up two hits and walking two.

Oliver Degenhardt was 2 for 3 for the Chinooks, while Jordan Jaffe was 2 for 4.

In the second game, the Oilers were only able to manage three hits, two by New and one by Eddie Leon.

Frankie Gulko went 6 1-3 innings for the Chinooks, allowing the three hits while walking one and striking out five. Gavin Alveti recorded the final two outs.

Oilers starter Nicholai Arbach gave up the critical run to the Chinooks in the fourth. He went five innings, allowing five hits while walking two and striking out four.

Ty Thomas pitched an inning, allowing just a hit.

Kade Smith was 2 for 3 for the Chinooks.
