Volleyball roundup: SoHi, Kenai pull out wins

Host Soldotna celebrated its senior night with a 3-1 nonconference victory over Nikiski on Thursday.

The Stars, a Division I team, defeated Nikiski, a Division II team, 20-25, 25-20, 25-22 and 25-13. SoHi moves to 3-8 overall, while the Bulldogs fall to 1-7.

Ariel VanZandt had four kills and five blocks for the Bulldogs, while Jaycee Tauriainen had 14 digs, nine assists and five kills. Mckinlee Jeffreys added 11 digs and two aces, while Rylee Ellis had 12 digs and five kills, and Savanna Stock had six aces.

The Stars honored seniors Ashlee Anderson, Chloe Armstrong, Emma Brantley, Adarra Hagelund, Jolie Widaman and Aleena Zener, as well as senior managers Isabella Tough and Dianne Nasibog.

Zener had four aces and 11 digs, while Armstrong had 10 kills and Hagelund had five blocks.

The Stars host Wasilla in Northern Lights Conference matches this weekend. SoHi’s varsity plays at 6 p.m. today and 12:30 p.m. Saturday.

Nikiski travels to Kenai for a 6 p.m. Southcentral Conference matchup today.

Kenai Central 3, Wasilla 0

The host Kardinals, a Division II team, swept the Warriors, a Division I club, on Thursday to move to 9-0 overall in nontournament play.

The scores were 25-22, 25-21 and 26-24.

Jorgi Phillips had four aces and 27 assists for the Kardinals, while Kardinals coach Tracie Beck texted that Andie Galloway was fantastic with 12 kills and 15 digs.

Valerie Villegas pitched in 26 digs and three aces, while Emma Beck had eight kills, Erin Koziczkowski had seven kills, and Koziczkowski and Cali Holmes each had two stuff blocks.

Homer trip canceled

The Homer volleyball team’s trip to Southeast this weekend was canceled due to COVID close contacts, according to Mariners coach Stephanie Carroll.
