Tuesday: Soldotna soccer sweeps Homer

The host Soldotna soccer teams swept Homer in Peninsula Conference action Tuesday at Justin Maile Field at Soldotna High School.

The SoHi girls topped the Mariners 2-0 to move to 2-1 in the league and 4-4 overall. Homer drops to 0-3 and 2-5.

The Stars boys notched a 1-0 victory over Homer to move to 4-0 in the league and 7-2 overall. The Mariners are 1-2-1 and 3-3-1.

In the girls game, Ryan Queen kept a clean sheet for the Stars. Emma Glassmaker scored on an assist from Jazzalynn McDonald, and Jillian Duncan knocked in a corner kick from Teagen Kobylarz.

The boys game saw Soldotna’s Trae Pitsch, on an assist from Johnny Wardas, score the game-winner in stoppage time in the second half.

That was enough for a SoHi defense backed by goalie Luke Hillyer.

The first time the teams matched up, a 3-0 win for Soldotna, the Mariners were able to keep the ball away from the Stars in the first half.

This time, Homer did it nearly all game.

“We didn’t play very well most of the game,” SoHi head coach Erik Dolphin wrote in a text message. “They outplayed us for a lot of the game.

“Same thing with keeping the ball away from us and making us frustrated. We hung around and were able to get it done at the last second.”

Homer coach Tyler Jeffres wrote that both teams played a fantastic game.

“We hit the crossbar and had shots on goal,” he wrote. “We just didn’t get the final bounce today.”
