Tuesday: Oilers take slugfest over Pilots, win for 6th straight time

The Peninsula Oilers defeated the Anchorage Glacier Pilots 16-12 on Tuesday in Alaska Baseball League play at Coral Seymour Memorial Park in Kenai.

The Oilers ran their winning streak to six. Peninsula also has won its last nine home games and is 15-3 at Seymour Park.

The local nine will conclude its regular season and home slate with a 6 p.m. Wednesday contest against the Pilots.

The Oilers are 22-17 in the league and will finish third. If the Oilers win their final game and the 23-14 Mat-Su Miners lose their remaining three games, the teams would be tied. Mat-Su won the season series 6-4.

The Miners are in second, 2.5 games behind the 25-11 Anchorage Bucs. In the playoffs, the Oilers will travel to face the team that finishes second.

At the bottom of the standings, the Pilots and Chugiak-Eagle River Chinooks are battling for the final playoff spot. The 13-26 Pilots are one game ahead of the 10-25 Chinooks.

Tuesday’s Oilers-Pilots game was a painful day for pitching and defense.

The Pilots slugged out 17 hits, but committed four errors and issued 14 walks to Oilers batters. The Oilers had 13 hits, but committed five errors.

Peninsula led 2-0 after the first inning, but the Pilots led 4-3 after two, 7-5 after three, 8-7 after four and 11-7 after five.

The Oilers broke through with eight runs in the seventh for a 15-11 lead, then tacked on another run in the eighth. Anchorage scored a final run in the ninth.

The first two pitchers struggled for the Oilers. Max Sasaki gave up seven runs on six hits in three innings, and Seth Wrightstone gave up four runs on seven hits in two innings.

Colby Reynolds and Zach Camp cooled off the Pilots long enough for the Oilers to win. Reynolds went three scoreless innings, while Camp gave up a run in an inning.

All of the Pilots had a rough day on the mound. Mac Zaistoski gave up seven runs on nine hits in four innings, while Colton Haase gave up eight runs on three hits and 12 walks in 2 1-3 innings. Rodrigo Barajas gave up a run on a hit in 1 2-3 innings.

Cole Dawson was 3 for 4 with two runs and an RBI for the Oilers, while Braden Smith was 2 for 6 with two runs and Andrew Alva was 3 for 4 with two runs and two RBIs.

Also, Colin Robson had three runs, Eddie Leon had three runs and three RBIs, Cody New had two RBIs and Cole Wilson had two RBIs.

For the Pilots, Dylan Marx was 4 for 6 with three runs, Luke Heefner was 2 for 4, Luke Stulga was 3 for 6, Jake Dodge was 2 for 5 with two runs and Jacob Kowes was 2 for 5 with two runs and two RBIs.
