Tuesday: Oilers get back on track by thumping Glacier Pilots

The Peninsula Oilers defeated the Anchorage Glacier Pilots 13-2 in an Alaska Baseball League game shortened to eight innings by the mercy rule Tuesday at Mulcahy Stadium in Anchorage.

The Oilers improved to 1-1 on an eight-game road trip that comes right after the team went 7-3 on a homestand.

The team travels to Lee Jordan Field in Chugiak to take on the Chugiak-Eagle River Chinooks at 6 p.m. Wednesday.

The Anchorage Bucs lead the league at 12-5 while the Oilers are 9-7, the Mat-Su Miners are 9-9, the Glacier Pilots are 8-13 and the Chinooks are 6-10.

The day after recording five hits in a 7-1 loss to the Bucs, the Oilers erupted for 12 hits against the Pilots.

The game was tied at 1 after one inning, but the Oilers led 3-1 after three, 7-1 after five and 10-2 after six. Peninsula ended the game by scoring three times in the eighth to push the lead over 10, then holding Anchorage scoreless in the bottom of the eighth.

Colin Robson was 3 for 5 with three RBIs and a run for the Oilers, while Bryce Burkey was 3 for 5 with two runs and an RBI, and Braden Smith was 2 for 4 with a run and two RBIs.

Also, Petey Soto scored three runs, Cole Dawson scored three runs, Ty Thomas had a pair of RBIs, and Max Roffwarg also knocked in two.

Max Sasaki enjoyed the run support in cruising to the win on the hill. He went six innings, allowing two runs on seven hits while walking three and striking out five.

Cody New and Cameron Teper each had scoreless innings for the Oilers.

In addition to giving up the 12 hits, Glacier Pilots pitching also walked 10 batters.

Mac Zawistoski gave up seven runs — six earned — in 4 2-3 innings, Jace Russell gave up three runs in 1 1-3 innings, and Colton Haase gave up three runs — two earned — in two innings.

Jake Dodge provided the offensive highlight to the Pilots, finishing 2 for 3 with a home run.
