Soldotna track and field sweeps SoHi Invitational

The Soldotna track and field teams swept the SoHi Invitational on Friday and Saturday at Soldotna High School.

On the boys side, the Stars scored 159.5 points, while runner-up Grace Christian had 119. Kenai was third with 105, Nikiski was sixth with 14 and Cook Inlet Academy tied for ninth with four points.

On the girls side, Soldotna had 194 points while runner-up Grace had 92. Kenai was third with 86 and Nikiski was sixth with 20.

“It was good to keep on track for our goals and fun to see the kids compete hard,” Soldotna coach Phil Leck said.

Leck said the goal is to win the Region 3/Division I title and for another solid finish at state. The Soldotna girls have been in the top five at the last three Division I state meets, while the boys have been in the top five at the last two.

“Something that goes unnoticed is we’re doing that against schools with three times our enrollment,” Leck said.

Saturday was windy and cold, but Leck said there were still feel-good stories. SoHi’s Ashlee Anderson won the discus with a personal record of 96 feet, 1 inch.

“She’s a senior who’s worked four years to get better,” Leck said. “Probably the highlight of my weekend was watching her win that event.”

Leck said Daniel McRorie is a similar yes-coach athlete, so it was also fun watching him win the 300-meter hurdles at 45.81 seconds.

Also on the boys side for the Stars, Dylan Dahlgren won the shot put and discus. Nate Johnson won the 400, 800 and triple jump. Leigh Tacey II won the 100 and 200.

The Stars also took the 800, 1,600 and 3,200 relays. James Innes, McRorie, Ethan Sewell and Jared Williams won the 800, Tacey II, Wyatt Faircloth, Innes and Finnley Loop won the 1,600, and Loop, Elijah Jedlicki, Jacob Strausbaugh and Jonathan Gordon won the 3,200.

Sewell also took the high jump for the Stars.

For the Soldotna girls, Gracie Bras took the 100, Jordan Strausbaugh won the 3,200 and Anaulie Sedivy won the 300 hurdles.

Bras teamed with Ellie Burns, Katelyn Morrison and Kaytlin McAnelly to win the 800 relay. Strausbaugh teamed with Annie Burns, Ellie Burns and Sedivy to win the 1,600 relay, and both Burns and Kaidence Shaeffer to win the 3,200 relay.

Leck said Bras, who was second in the 200 and set a personal record in finishing fourth in the long jump, continues to have a good season on the heels of an impressive opening weekend at the Big C Relays.

Mandi Sisley, Angelina Chavarria, Telotha Braden and Carson Dement also won the 400 relay for the Stars.

The Kenai boys got a win from Jacob Begich in the long jump and a victory from the 400 relay of Tyler Hippchen, Reagan Graves, Begich and James Sparks.

For the Kenai girls, Emma Beck won the shot put and Emilee Wilson won the triple jump.

Rylee Ellis had a standout performance for the Nikiski girls. She won the long jump and also took the 800.
