The Grizzlies notched a nonconference victory over the Mariners at The Dome in Anchorage. Homer falls to 3-2-2 overall.

“I thought we played really hard, but we played defensively,” Homer coach Mike Tozzo said. “We definitely got the attack going in the second half and had a few more chances to score.”

Tozzo said his team had trouble stringing together passes and mounting a sustained attack.

“It was a hard-fought game and both teams played well,” Tozzo said. “I think the next time we play it will be much the same. It was a pretty even match.”

Tozzo said Sydney Shelby and Mariah McGuire were both solid and center back, while Felicia Weisser made some tough saves to keep it at 1-0.

The Grizzlies topped the Mariners in nonconference action at The Dome in Anchorage. Homer is now 2-5 overall.

“I’m always proud of the guys, regardless of who we go against,” Homer coach Adam Diaz said. “Just stepping on the field takes a lot of courage.

“The thing that hurt us the most is we had a few injuries during the game and people stepping into positions they haven’t played before.”

Diaz said without a lot of practice time, his squad has to learn by playing. He is still thinks the team is fine-tuning the things it takes to win the games that count.

Houston girls 7, Nikiski 0

The visiting Bulldogs dropped a nonconference contest against the Hawks to fall to 0-3 overall.

Nikiski coach Angie Coelho said in an email her team spent more time on offense and the result was a goal by Dani Thies, assisted by Brooke Able.

The visiting Bulldogs lost to the Moose in nonconference action to fall to 0-3.

Palmer led 9-0 at the half.

Nikiski coach Jeremy Garrett said in a text message that the Bulldogs changed goalies at halftime and added an extra defender on defense, providing a better and strong defensive line. Garrett said the team is looking forward to wrapping up the road trip today with a game against Redington.
