Saturday hoops: Soldotna boys topple Juneau in overtime

Editor’s note: The original online version had the incorrect day for the third-place game for the SoHi girls.

The Soldotna boys basketball team defeated Juneau-Douglas: Yadaa.at Kale 62-60 in overtime Saturday at the George Houston Capital City Classic in Juneau.

The Stars move to 1-1 in the tournament and 3-2 overall.

SoHi head coach Darren Zibell wrote in a text message that Easton Hawkins had two crucial baskets in overtime and Izaiah Gilbert had two big free throws.

Gilbert led the Stars with 28 points, a gutty performance after spraining his ankle earlier in the game. Hawkins had 13.

Also for the Stars, Damari Adams had 6, Theo Huff had 5, Owen Buckbee and Jayden Stuyvesant had 4, and Liam Peck had 2.

For the Crimson Bears, Ahmir Parker had 16, Joren Gasga had 15, Pedrin Sageda-Hurt had 10, Brandon Casperson had 9, Tyler Frisby had 3, Damian Efergan, Gavin Gerrin and Logan Carriker had 2, and Ben Sikes had 1.

Also at the tournament, the Kenai Central girls lost to Juneau 57-13. The Kardinals are 0-2 at the tourney and 1-4 overall.

Bryleigh Williams and Ellsi Miller had 3 for Kenai, while Gracee Every, McKenzie Spence and Hallie Songer had 2, and Willow Graham had 1.

For the Crimson Bears, Bergen Erickson and Kerra Baxter had 14, Layla Tokuoka had 9, Gwen Nilich and Gailynn Baxter had 7, and Camrry Lockhart, Mary Johnson and Athena Warr had 2.

The tournament concludes Sunday. The Kenai girls face Klawock at 1 p.m., while the Soldotna boys take on Cordova at 3 p.m.

So Cal Holiday Prep Classic

The Soldotna girls fell 42-29 to Paloma Valley, California, at the So Cal Holiday Prep Classic in San Diego.

Soldotna is now 4-1 overall.

Playing in the semifinals of the NAIA Bronze bracket, SoHi head coach Rustin Hitchcock texted that his team ran out of steam with Hope Hillyer sick.

The Stars now face University City, California, for third place Monday at 12:30 p.m. AKST.

Anaulie Sedivy paced the Stars with 10, while Alyssa McDonald had 5, Ryan Queen and Laurel Johnson had 4, Juliet Innes had 3 and Isabelle Cruz had 1.

For Paloma Valley, Gina Misiaita had 17, Ambriel Harkins had 10, Emily Davis had 7, and Meliyah Jones, Winnie Madut, Aangenae Gorbea and Mianna Bravo had 2.

Joe Floyd Tournament

The Homer girls and boys basketball teams both fell to 0-2 at the 56th annual Joe Floyd Basketball Tournament in Kodiak and 0-2 overall with losses to the hosts.

The Mariners girls fell 49-46 in overtime.

Mizzy Arbues poured in 26 points to lead the Bears.

For Homer, Channing Lowney led the way with 14, while Keagan Niebuhr had 10.

Also, Maddie Miotke had 9, Kylee Akee had 6, Abby Ostrom had 4 and Mally Im had 3.

The Homer boys took a 70-57 loss to the Bears.

Spencer Dye hit five 3-pointers on the way to 19 points for the Mariners, while CJ Burns added 18 points.

Also, Einar Pedersen had 7, Henry Wedvik had 6, Preston Stanislaw had 5 and Ben Engebretsen had 2.

Kelly Ticman erupted for 29 points to led Kodiak, while Mac Abellera pitched in with 17.

Also, Bubba Basuel and Liam Danelski had 6, Isaac Calderon had 3, and Cowen Mangampo and Julian Kiefer each had 2.

Sunday, both the Homer girls and boys finish at the tournament by playing Bethel. The girls tip at 1 p.m., while the boys start at 2:30 p.m.

SoHi hockey won the End of the Road tournament in Homer and the wrestling team gained 20 individual wins.
